After PIMS: Who Is Responsible For Electrical Safety In Pakistan's Hospitals?
The deaths of 14 newborn babies in the recent fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad have understandably generated questions about fire alarms, sprinklers, emergency exits, evacuation procedures and staff training. All of these questions need answers. But there is another question that deserves considerably more attention: How safe are the electrical systems inside Pakistan’s hospitals? The precise source of the PIMS fire has not yet been conclusively established.

Why Institutions Matter: Pakistan's Long Road From Political Instability To Economic Prosperity
In Pakistan, there is much debate about why under successive governments, there has not been sustained economic growth. Over the last 80 years of history, Pakistan has experienced short periods of economic growth but then very quickly it is followed by long periods of economic stagnation. Every few years, there is the same balance-of-payment crisis, rising unemployment, a new IMF program, heavy taxation and this cycle repeats. What lies at the heart of this problem is often debated.
Pakistan’s Electricity Tariffs Need A Redesign, Not Another Surcharge
Pakistan’s electricity sector debate has become a debate about trust in the public sector. Consumers see rising bills, industry sees weakening competitiveness, and policymakers see a power sector whose costs keep rising through tariffs, subsidies and circular debt. The public anger is justifiable and has intensified sharply. But the deeper problem is not only that electricity has become expensive, but also that the current bill itself no longer explains what consumers are actually paying for.

More Lessons from Hackers: How IT Can Do Better
Kelly Shortridge is an advocate for better resiliency in IT systems. The author of Security Chaos Engineering: Sustaining Resilience in Software and Systems and a senior principal engineer at Fastly in the office of the CTO spoke at this year’s Black Hat conference. She explained why attackers are more resilient and what IT organizations can do to become more resilient and responsive.
Lessons IT Can Steal from Hackers
Shortridge spoke at Black Hat this month about what IT security pros can learn from attackers. Specifically, she pointed out: Attackers have a faster operational tempo; Attackers design, develop, and operate mechanisms to outmaneuver IT; Attackers research interconnections and interactions in systems; and Attackers have more tangible and actionable success metrics.
