My Logbook of 20,000 Lunkers Shows Exactly Which Lures Catch Big Bass Original
This story, “Bull Bass Are My Hobby,” appeared in the July 1963 issue of Outdoor Life. Sometimes you can’t win. Conditions that July night were just about perfect. It was warm and still, with barely enough breeze to ruffle the surface of the water. A big moon, almost full, made casting as easy as by daylight. I was on Bull Shoals Lake, the huge, sprawling impoundment that straddles the Arkansas-Missouri border in the north-central Ozarks.

Big 12 basketball fans recall final pre-pandemic memories
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As Big 12 basketball fans descended Thursday on downtown Kansas City, Missouri, to watch the Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament quarterfinals, many recalled the moment when players for Texas and Texas Tech were taken off the floor last year. Hours later it became official — the 2020 Big 12 tourney was canceled along with almost everything else as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted our lives.

Climate Change and the Endangered Species Act
Ever since it was signed into law by President Richard Nixon in 1973, the Endangered Species Act (ESA) has been remarkably successful at protecting vulnerable species and their habitats. The ESA is far from perfect, of course, but includes among its triumphs the recovery of the iconic bald eagle from the brink of extinction. Now, the Trump administration has proposed measures that would significantly weaken the ESA.
How to maximize value from push notifications
In my last post, I talked about how to use email to get even more out of your most valuable users (your customers!). Email is certainly a tried-and-true digital channel, but it’s also limited, especially in the case of app retention and engagement. In the go-go-go mobile world of 2018, adding any extra steps (e.g., checking email) to a conversion funnel is a deal-breaker.
How to structure your email program to retain customers
If you’re in marketing, I’ll bet that at one point in your professional career you have either heard or learned for yourself that keeping a customer costs less than obtaining a new one. Ideally, repeat customers are a lot like dogs: They are immensely loyal. They stick around longer than they probably should; they speak highly of you to friends and family; and they spend more money with you over time.
All about value props: How customer and competitive research should shape your marketing
Conveying the value of your product or service is a foundational tenet of marketing. Whether you are a mature company or a startup, understanding your worth and knowing how to properly communicate it to current and prospective customers is key to success. But as those of us tasked with driving marketing strategy know, this isn’t always an easy endeavor. How many times has a brilliant ad copy idea missed the mark? Or a fresh redesign of your landing page caused conversion rates to decline?

Competitive research: 3 free steps to a better brand strategy
In the course of my work, I get the chance to help companies of all shapes and sizes get on track to achieve long-term, sustained growth. One of my most requested services is the gathering of competitive intelligence. Clients have a fervent desire to better understand the competitive landscape, but they often lack the resources to obtain this information and effectively integrate it into their marketing strategies.
The Career Funnel Is Upside Down
There’s some recent research focused on a trend called “career funneling” that really sparked my interest. The research started with the understanding that graduates are “funneling” into the same consulting, finance and tech fields. But why? According to Amy J. Binder, professor of sociology at University of California at San Diego, a lot of the blame rests with the colleges and universities.
Whether you sprint, wander or stumble, it still helps to have the right equipment
I was just reading an article in the New York Times on the path to "adulthood" for today’s youth. While the article was specifically highlighting some nuances of this generation, the archetypes of folks I've encountered throughout my life were clearly recognizable – sprinters, wanderers and stumblers. I don’t know that the article was casting judgment about any one of these being the right path.
