Hit-and-Run Dump Truck Driver Kills Cyclist On 34th Street in Midtown
A hit-and-run dump truck driver struck and killed a cyclist on 34th Street in Midtown on Monday, according to preliminary reports. The cyclist and driver were both traveling west on 34th Street when the driver struck the cyclist at 10:51 a.m. near the Macy’s in Herald Square and across the street from Primark, NYPD said. The cyclist died at the scene as the dump truck driver fled, according to the police.
Corruption In Plain Sight: Why Does This New Jersey Resident Have A New York Judge’s Placard?
Why is a car with New Jersey plates and a New York State-issued parking placard parked in a “Judges only” parking space in Lower Manhattan when only New York State residents can be judges? It’s a mystery for sure — but don’t expect any actual officials to care enough to solve it for you. Streetsblog has repeatedly seen a beat-up white Hyundai parked outside the Manhattan courthouse — frequently in “judge-only” parking — with a real court-issued placard on the dash.
Analyze This: NYPD’s Elite Crash Unit Is Investigating Fewer Collisions
New York is second to the Second City. The elite team of NYPD detectives that investigates serious crashes in hopes of uncovering critical street safety flaws is analyzing even fewer collisions than normal this year — and that shortfall again underscores the squad’s limited safety role compared to peer cities such as Chicago. Through Sept.
Thursday’s Headlines: Car-Brained Ideas Edition
As predicted, the entire East Side is a traffic shitshow. Our friends at Hell Gate offered the latest coverage — “A Plunge Into Midtown Traffic Hell” — enduring the congestion, frustration, noise and pollution so you, dear reader, don’t have to. The outlet’s conclusion (which you’ve read here a million times): Gridlock alert days are meaningless unless there are actual teeth in them — like deploying the very congestion pricing surcharges that Gov.
NYPD Commissioner Tisch Declined To Punish Cops Who Used Force So Other Cops Could Park Illegally
Police officers can rough up civilians to protect their ability to illegally park. That’s the unmistakable conclusion from a recent decision by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch to not punish officers who roughed up and threatened to run over a cyclist who was blocking other cops from parking on a sidewalk — a decision by the top cop that came even though the NYPD’s patrol guide prohibits both excessive force and bars officers from parking on the sidewalk.
Cop Left Pedestrian To Die After Hit-and-Run — And Told His Pals To Lie About It: DA
An off-duty cop who critically injured a Queens pedestrian before fleeing the scene and then getting his friends to lie about the incident is now facing seven years in the slammer for the assault, reckless driving and tampering with evidence, prosecutors charged this week. According to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, the officer, Jatinderpal Singh, had been repeatedly driving recklessly on that March night, including speeding and ignoring stop signals.
Nine People Have Been Killed By Hit-And-Run Drivers This Month Alone

Manhattan DA Revokes Parking Placard of Employee With Bent License Plate
Don’t get all bent out of shape. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office revoked an employee’s parking placard and opened an investigation into their conduct on Friday after Streetsblog asked about the employee’s comically creased license plate. “We have revoked access to the vehicle and placard,” said Douglas Cohen, a spokesperson for the Manhattan District Attorney.
NYPD De-Escalates Its ‘Bummer Streets’ Policing At This Week’s Car-Free DOT Event
The NYPD largely pulled back from its “overkill” policing at this Saturday’s Summer Streets event, reducing chokepoints that had created dangerous congestion for runners, walkers and cyclists at the previous week’s event — a de-escalation that came after a week of criticism from media outlets including Streetsblog.
Mamdani Stands by NYPD’s ‘Overkill’ In Policing Summer Streets
The NYPD’s justification for choking this weekend’s car-free Summer Streets with patrol vehicles didn’t add up on Monday as Mayor Mamdani defended Commissioner Jessica Tisch’s heavy-handed approach that hadn’t been deployed previously even after actual terror attacks. Police officials claimed they created narrow chokepoints at intersections along the car-free route in order to deter possible terror attacks involving vehicles.
The Few: Cops Wrote Just 32 Tickets to Drivers Blocking Bus And Bike Lanes Last Week
Justice took a holiday. Cops across the entire city collectively wrote just 32 parking tickets in three key categories last week, the NYPD’s own data reveals. That’s right — across the more than 6,300 miles of roadway throughout New York City, the NYPD’s nearly 34,000 officers ticketed only 10 drivers for blocking bus lanes, 12 drivers for parking in a bus stop and 10 drivers for parking in a bike lane in the seven days covered by the NYPD’s latest data sheet, July 20 to 26.
The Scofflaw Menace: Out-of-State Toll Dodgers Are Also Reckless Super Speeders In NYC
It’s a gateway drug. Out-of-state motorists who don’t pay their tolls doubly abuse New Yorkers by also speeding and running red lights across the five boroughs and even causing serious crashes, according to a first-ever Streetsblog review of legal efforts against the toll scofflaws.
Cops Seek Hit-And-Run Driver Who Injured 4-Year-Old Girl Outside Bronx Playground
Cops say this is the man who hit Aicha Camara on Wednesday in the Bronx. Photo: NYPD Cops are hunting for the driver who hit a 4-year-old girl near a park on Wednesday and fled as she was taken to the hospital with an apparent head injury. Aicha Camara was hit around 4 p.m. near the Longfellow Playground in the Longwood section of the Bronx, her sister and police said. In addition to the unspecified head wound, the driver also shattered her right leg, cops said.
S-Cop-Laws: Bronx Cops Will Even Park All Over A Memorial … To Fallen Bronx Cops!
Not even the NYPD can stop the NYPD from illegal parking. Cops in the 44th Precinct in the Highbridge section of the Bronx routinely clog up the public roadway in front of the the E. 169 Street station house, park illegally on sidewalks and even desecrate a public memorial to their own fallen brethren — but after Streetsblog asked top police officials about the problem, the situation was remedied. For one day.
BREAKING: Police Driver Left Scene As Cyclist Writhed In Pain After Incident: Video
A police driver allegedly struck a cyclist early on Sunday morning in Chinatown and then left the scene, according to video posted on X by former cop Sal Greco that has prompted an internal investigation inside 1 Police Plaza. The video shows a cyclist on an electric Citi Bike writhing in apparent pain on the pavement next to an unmarked black Chevy suburban with flashing emergency lights on Madison Street near Market Street.
NYPD Won’t Let Super-Speeder Cop Drive Squad Cars As Internal Affairs Launches Probe Following Streetsblog Report
The NYPD has barred a repeatedly reckless officer from getting behind the wheel of police vehicles — and has launched an internal affairs investigation — after Streetsblog revealed the Staten Island cop’s astonishing record of deadly driving.
New York’s Fined-est: Meet the Reckless Cops With Thousands in Tickets
A single unmarked car an NYPD unit linked to the agency’s history of aggressive police chases has been nabbed by city speeding cameras hundreds of times over the past three years — but the reckless driving done by cops in that vehicle was not claimed to be part of any police “emergency.” The unmarked grey Subaru belonging to the department’s controversial Community Response Team has almost $38,000 in unpaid speed and red-light camera tickets — and the NYPD never got those tickets dismissed...

To Protect and Unnerve: Cop Hits Cyclist With Squad Car … In a Protected Bike Lane!
Vision? Zero. A cop drove his squad car into the Schermerhorn Street protected bike lane in downtown Brooklyn last week and injured a cyclist who had the light and was clearly in the well-demarcated cycle track.
Stinks From The Head Down: NYC Sheriff Anthony Miranda Abused His Placard And Defaced His Plate
They shot the Sheriff — and caught his wife with a fake placard. 12:03 AM EDT on June 8, 2026 Why was former Sheriff Anthony Miranda's wife driving around with a fake placard and a covered plate? Cops Are Writing More Parking Tickets Citywide — But Failing Badly In Manhattan’s Placard Zone
It’s a good news/bad news thing: NYPD officers are issuing more traffic-related summonses citywide after the much-hyped creation of “quality-of-life” teams, but some areas of the city, including the area around NYPD headquarters that’s notorious for placard abuse, are experiencing a bizarre decline, the agency’s own data show. The top line is solid: cops wrote 12-percent more summonses through most of May compared to the same period in 2025.
Knicks Watch Parties Are Back — Just Not Outside the Garden
Mayor Mamdani says he’s all for Knicks fans celebrating their once-in-a-generation playoff run in public. He’s just not willing to square off with his police commissioner, Jessica Tisch, to make it happen.
Feds Charge Fraud Temp Tag Dealers ID’d in Streetsblog’s ‘Ghost Plate’ Series
Streetsblog got action. Eleven fraudulent car dealers — including several who were identified in Streetsblog’s award-winning April 2023 investigation into the black market for fake temporary tags — sold more than 100,000 phony plates, robbing taxpayers of about $15 million and turning those vehicles into “ghost cars” that were involved in at least six homicides and thousands of other offenses, federal prosecutors said in indictments unsealed on Wednesday.

Can’t ‘Beat’ This: Thousands of Cops Will Be Out Of Cars And On Foot Patrol This Summer
The NYPD will double the number of officers on foot posts this summer — 3,800 car-free beat cops across 40 precincts — evidence that NYPD leadership increasingly sees that putting cops on the beat is more effective than having them driving around.

Mayor Mamdani Has Not Staffed Up NYPD Oversight As Promised
It’s a personnel failure. The city’s main independent overseer of the NYPD is operating with less than one-third of its workforce — and might even have more interns than staffers right now — defying Mayor Mamdani’s campaign promise to rein in the department’s lax internal oversight. Streetsblog has learned that the Office of the Inspector General of the NYPD now has just 10 staffers, down from as many as 37 in 2017.

ICE Is Paying the Salaries of This Town’s Entire Police Force
On March 2, the town of Carroll, New Hampshire, population 820, received a $122,515 wire transfer from the Department of Homeland Security, making it among the first wave of local governments reaping the financial benefits of the Trump administration’s efforts to build out a network of local officers assisting in federal immigration enforcement. Four months before the payment, the town had signed up as part of DHS’s “Task Force Model,” which is part of the department’s so-called 287(g) program.

How we tracked down thousands of police misconduct files
I’ve spent the past two and a half years requesting and reviewing more than 10,000 misconduct files from New York State’s roughly 500 police agencies. The work has been as tedious as it probably sounds. But it has also contributed to a new era of transparency around policing. These files, many of which had never been reviewed, reveal the systems through which police departments have addressed negligence and misconduct committed by their own.
