Stabilizing distributed OLTP under high contention via measurement-driven adaptive concurrency control

Abstract Distributed online transaction processing (OLTP) systems with high contending workloads can be extremely unstable, with negative impacts such as abort cascades, lock contention, and retry amplifications. Traditional schemes such as two-phase locking (2PL), optimistic concurrency control (OCC) and multi-version concurrency control (MVCC) rely on a fixed policy and are not flexible enough to cater for dynamic contention patterns, resulting in reduced throughput and high latency skew.

I played basketball in high school – many moons ago when offense played half the court and defense played the other. I loved the competition with other schools, but what I loved most was the camaraderie with my teammates. We cheered each other on when we won. We commiserated together as a team when we lost. The game is nothing like it used to be. I’ve always loved the NBA with past greats like Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlin. The stats these four have are amazing.
