Regulation: Many habits exist because they help us cope. They calm anxiety, numb discomfort or create a sense of control. When the nervous system is overwhelmed, willpower is unreliable. Learning to regulate the body through rest, movement, breath, or connection makes change more realistic. Discipline: Discipline is not about being harsh or punishing ourselves. Discipline is about personal responsibility and creating structure that supports the person you want to become.

Get curious, not critical. Try to understand what he gets from these activities. Does watching sports help him decompress? Does partying meet his need for social connection? Communicate your needs clearly. If the real issue is not getting enough quality time together, say that directly. “I feel disconnected when we do not spend time together during the week. Can we plan some dedicated couple time?” is more productive than, “You play too many games.” Look for compromise.
