Wellness That Works | Health Travel
Real wellness is built on small and steady habits that anyone can do! As I venture towards mid-life, post-office burnout, and with ten subsequent years of balancing a career that encompasses yoga, travel, writing, and consulting; I am finally in a knowledgeable position to share tried and tested wellness routines which actually work.
What's That Smell? | Om Yoga Magazine
Yoga studios, much like the humans they host, come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and, let us not mince words here, smells. Step into any yoga studio and you will quickly realise that you are not just entering a space of wellness and tranquillity but you are also walking into a sensory assortment of surprises. Some spaces greet you with soothing lavender, while others hit you with a wall of patchouli so dense it could knock over a seasoned yogi mid-warrior pose.
The warm embrace of winter yoga
The cool depths of winter are finally here with short days and even longer nights, however, contrary to what one might think, it is also the ideal backdrop for your yoga practice. This is the time of year when you can slow down, turn inwards and embrace the season's natural rhythm. In these colder months, yoga provides not only physical warmth but also emotional nourishment. Eight cool reasons to practice winter yoga (pun intended!) 1.
OM Lite: See Me, Hear Me | Om Yoga Magazine
As a London-based, Hong Kong born and raised yoga teacher, I feel fortunate to be a part of a community, which is largely welcoming and inclusive of people from all backgrounds and ethnicities. Yoga and meditation are so widely practiced across the world, and in London alone, I have students from all corners of the globe, with different abilities and circumstances.
OM Lite: The Laying Down bit at the End of the Class
Savasana, also known as ‘Corpse pose’, is widely considered many people’s favourite part of a yoga class. For the non-initiated, it might feel like a power nap, and for the more seasoned yogi, it is an important part of a well-rounded asana practice. Wherever you fall on the yoga spectrum, it is undeniably an enjoyable experience and almost always much needed. As a rough guide, many yoga professionals recommend practicing five minutes of Savasana for every 30 minutes of asana that you practice.
Adjusting with Consent
Yoga is a personal practice of self-awareness and self-discovery, so it is important to do it in a safe and comfortable space. People come to yoga for many reasons including de-stressing at the end of a long day, connecting with their inner self, creating a sense of peace in their life and to boost feelings of happiness. When it comes to hands-on yoga adjustments and assists, these can divide students and be polarising.
OM Lite: One Step Closer to World Peace
Hands up if you ever have novel thoughts, or ponder on things and situations that feel impossible? There are certainly a lot of ‘what ifs’ that pass through my mind, and amidst the uncertainty and chaos of the world we live in today, I sometimes wonder if a better world could be reached if everyone on our planet was a yogi? It is a basic thought but one I am sure lots of other yogis have considered at some point.
3 poses to nurture your inner warrior
By Sarah Highfield, Yogagise Yoga One of the many wonderful benefits of yoga is its ability to transform your mind and body. On days when you need to calm down after a stressful day of work, you might turn to yin yoga or yoga nidra, and on days when you need to energise and lift your mood, you might turn to vinyasa flow yoga or chanting. Similarly, on days that you need to feel strong and powerful, you can practice various warrior poses to help you embody those emotions.
OM Lite: Yogi's being non-yogic
One of the biggest yoga myths and stereotypes that I often come across is that all yogis are walking around in a state of peaceful bliss and are utterly selfless. This is a narrative that is both consciously and unconsciously perpetuated by yoga studios, literature, media and yogis themselves.
OM Lite: How Much of a Yogi are you?
For many, yoga is not just a practice, nor is it bound by a time limit or a space, but instead an all-encompassing lifestyle choice and way of living. I love yoga because far beyond its well-documented mental and physical health benefits, it helps me to reframe my thoughts and actions across all areas of my life. And devoid of sounding too corny, I truly believe that it affects me for the better.
OM Lite - August 2023
Be present when you eat Eating in the present moment is a key principle of ayurvedic eating. In ayurveda, how you eat is just as important as what you eat, because it is essential for healthy digestion. At your next meal, try to eat free of distractions (read ‘screens’) and use all five of your senses. By eating more mindfully, you will make better food choices, appreciate your food more, and stop eating when you are full.

The ridiculous joy of laughter yoga
Think back to when you were a child and if you were ever in a bad mood, a family member might have started to make silly faces and sounds, or tell you jokes until you laughed so much that you forgot about your bad mood – sound familiar? Well, here is the good news: that method still works as an adult.
The intersection of yoga and capitalism
According to the latest research, the global yoga market is expected to reach a value of £176 billion by 2025. And that's just studios. Once retreats, clothing, mats and other accessories are accounted for, it could be worth eye-wateringly more. North American yoga fashion brand lululemon alone expects net revenues just shy of $8 billion (£6.5 billion) for 2022.
The 'sexy' side of yoga
Looking at a large portion of yoga media, whether that be mainstream or social media, the photos and videos which receive the most attention repeatedly feature yogis in the least amount of clothes. Undoubtedly, this style of imagery can be misinterpreted, construed in the wrong way, or seen as upfront 'sexy'. That said, let us not forget that there is a style of yoga, Tantra yoga, which has its rites in sexual rites and practices.
A case for the evolution of yoga...
A yoga-themed debate that continually rears its controversial head is one of how yoga has gone mainstream. It has become a commodity and evolved so far away from its foundations that it is no longer recognisable or reflective of its true essence.
Proprioception and yoga
What is proprioception? Proprioception is a term you may have increasingly heard thrown around by doctors and health professionals when referring to ‘body awareness’ — but what exactly does it mean and how does it affect you? It is often referred to as the body’s sixth sense after sight, sound, smell, taste and touch.

Why Winter is the Perfect Time to Workout – Honestly - BALANCE
Winter is officially upon us but, just because we’re getting homely, cosying up on the sofa and eating comfort food, it doesn’t mean our overall health and wellbeing need to suffer. For many of us, when the temperature drops, so does our exercise motivation. But it turns out that workouts during the winter can offer benefits that we don’t get in the summer, such as improved endurance.
2021: we’re ready for you!
If the people around me start to annoy me, I will have difficult conversations sooner rather than later, I will carefully talk to them early on so that tensions don’t boil over. Fixed mindset: I’m worried that I will catch coronavirus or someone close to me will. Growth mindset: I am doing my part by following health guidelines, practicing social distancing, and maintaining good hygiene. I will remind those around me to do the same.
5 Simple Ways to Make Yoga Part of Your Everyday Life
Yoga is not for everyone. Even as a Yoga Teacher, I completely appreciate and respect that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. However, incorporating a just little yoga into your everyday routine will make a big difference to your overall happiness and health. I’m not talking about rolling out a mat and wearing leggings, and realistically, we don’t all have the luxury of having copious amounts of free time to do that.

Yoga for Anxiety | Om Yoga Magazine
We are not even halfway through the year yet, but it would be fair to say that 2020 has challenged all of us in ways we could never have imagined. With the onset of COVID-19, the shift in the way the world works has been rapid and frightening, to say the least, and we are all adjusting to a new ‘normal’. For many people, the uncertainty surrounding coronavirus is one of the hardest things to handle, and because of this, increased stress and anxiety is only natural.
