Sarah Vehrs is a senior majoring in journalism and minoring in environmental science and policy at Cal State Long Beach. Sarah is a President's Scholar and has been working for the school newspaper, the Daily 49er for two years. She started as a staff writer and worked her way up to Assistant News Editor and then Enterprise Editor.

When nonprofit, right-wing organization Turning Point USA brought a flurry of conservative ideas to Long Beach State on Oct. 23, the university prepared itself with K-rail barriers, fencing and 70 police members. The event required dozens of personnel on standby, as well as added costs for LBSU, Turning Point USA and the Cal State University system. The total cost of the event was about $19,667.41, but according to Jeff Bliss, the university’s executive director of media, LBSU only paid $7,375.51.

By Sarah Vehrs, Contributing writer Thousands of eager guests gathered at the Long Beach Airport Saturday with their eyes to the skies. The sixth annual Festival of Flight kicked off with the National Anthem and a flyover demonstration where four planes flew side-by-side, releasing a trail of smoke in their wake. The event attracted hundreds of families with wide-eyed children, pulling their parents by the hand from aircraft to aircraft.

Brain power of many varieties was on display at Saturday’s ninth annual TEDx Manhattan Beach. Perhaps the most stirring example: Dr. Susan Harkema shared the tales of two brains that helped two bodies return from the brink. She told the true stories of two patients who overcame complete paralysis — regaining the ability to move their legs, stand and regain some measure of independence.

Why did you become a journalist?

I became a journalist because I love to write and listen to people.

I am most proud of the murder series I worked on for my college paper, the Daily 49er.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Don't let rejection discourage you! Keep pushing until you find the answers you need.
