As we put together the INDY’s Earth Day edition, local headlines warned of record high temperatures for this time of year in the week ahead. You’d be forgiven for getting a sense of déjà vu; last year saw central North Carolina’s hottest summer on record. That was, of course, the same summer we experienced historic flooding due to Tropical Storm Chantal. And this past winter saw plenty of ink spilled lamenting a trend of declining snowfall in the Triangle.

In Durham, DA Deberry Is Reelected, While Judge Jones Is Unseated

Durham’s district attorney was reelected to a third term and an incumbent District Court judge was unseated in Tuesday’s primary election. Sheriff Clarence Birkhead and Clerk of Superior Court Aminah Thompson both won resounding reelection bids, and District Court Judge Doretta Walker also won convincingly. District Court Judge Clayton Jones, after a rocky campaign, was defeated by challenger Christy Mallot. Myra Griffin won an open Superior Court seat.
