The first time I ever saw Patrick Mahomes II he was losing. Badly. I was a 17-year-old sports reporter for The Tyler Morning Telegraph and Sports Editor Phil Hicks had sent me out to cover the 2008 Texas East Major League State Championship game at Faulkner Park. This is the age group that gets to go to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, for the Little League World Series and gets on ESPN. It’s the one time you get the chance to be a national star as a 12-year-old.

If I’m 100% honest my top album of this year was Dance Mode by Bluey, which absolutely dominated my Spotify most played list. No joke, it’s one of the best kids albums out there so I wasn’t too upset about it. I didn’t listen to as much new music this year as I normally do so I’m certain I missed some stuff I’d really love. What the Rangers Mean to Me

On Wednesday night at around midnight I sat on the couch alone and cried. It was one of the happiest moments of my life. I don’t cry very often. Pretty much the only thing besides a death that will make me cry is nostalgia. When I think back on beautiful memories that can never happen again, I lose it. So as I sat and processed the fact that the Texas Rangers, my Texas Rangers, had finally won a World Series, I began to think about all of the games I went to with my parents and my brother.

What was your first job as a journalist?

As a teen I worked at the Tyler Morning Telegraph. I even covered 12 yr old Patrick Mahomes in the Little League State Championship.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Macbook, Wordpress, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro X, Yeti Microphone.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Learn the ins and outs of freelancing. It's not something most schools teach, but it'll sustain you through tough times & open up many doors.
