Eye On Illinois: Read the numbers, then ask a politician some relevant questions

The numbers are in, and Illinois is, well, about where we expected. The Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability last week issued its monthly briefing, which in June means wrapping up the state’s fiscal year. This time, the document is 23 pages (tinyurl.com/COGFAJune26) and well worth reading beyond the front-page summary, which states that actual revenues eclipsed the assumed totals used for budgeting by 1.8%.

Eye On Illinois: Still on the hunt for a truly informative receipt

Youth baseball once again took me to Tennessee last week, which provided an opportunity for one of my favorite “weird guy who cares too much about state government” things: scrutinizing receipts. For example, an Italian dinner in Pigeon Forge came to $42.67, and the receipt said that it generated $4.59 in “tax.” That’s 10.75%. Whataburger milkshakes in Sevierville were $7.98 and 94 cents “tax” – 11.78%.

Eye On Illinois: A state for 83% of America’s 250 years

Semiquincentennial: a word so rare my computer’s spellchecker underlined it in red. Among a national observance of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, a few thoughts about Illinois: With statehood achieved in December 1818, Illinois has officially existed for almost 208 of the country’s 250 years, or 83%. The U.S. Constitution is only 237 years old, and it wasn’t quite 30 when Illinois joined the Union as the 21st state.
