Farm Show Disappointment [Opinion]
Editor: I went to the Pennsylvania Farm Show Saturday (Jan. 4) for the first time in years. Being a former dairy farmer, I was shocked and disappointed that there were so few ag dealers and suppliers at the show. It was more like a flea market. I know the farm economy is tight now, but there is always new stuff coming out to help farms be better and more productive. I didn’t see any vendors there. I’m looking forward to Empire Farm Days this year (if it’s still going to happen).

Breaking the economy’s addiction to zero interest rate policy won’t be easy
For many years, we’ve written about our belief that the global economy is akin to a living organism that progressively adapts to its changing environment. In that regard, Darwin’s theories are as important as college textbooks and doctoral theses in the pantheon of economic thought. Sadly, the moving target presented by an evolving economy also makes forecasting its future a bit of a fool’s errand.
Financial accidents could happen
Still, a base-case expectation for the economy is a recession of meaningful length and depth that starts in early 2023. The battle against stubbornly high inflation rages on as central banks around the world raise interest rates and shrink their ballooned balance sheets. A recession of some sort in 2023 is becoming a consensus expectation as financial conditions progressively tighten.
Occam’s Razor and the state of financial markets
Fourteenth century philosopher William of Ockham provided a great service to today’s investors seeking to understand the current state of financial markets. To crudely summarize his seminal thesis that became known later as “Occam’s Razor,” phenomena are best explained by the simplest hypothesis possible. With that principle in mind, let’s try to figure out what markets are telling us. It goes without saying that the global economy has a problem with unacceptably high rates of inflation.
Why the stock market rallied
This is usually how it works. Just when the world appears to be full of nothing but darkness and despair, the wind shifts and attitudes improve. The same often occurs in the opposite direction when conditions seem nearly perfect. Behavioral finance academics attribute this phenomenon to a distinctly human trait called recency bias. When current conditions feel extreme, they’re viewed as unprecedented and intractable even though history is replete with previous examples that were only temporary.
A new economic paradigm or comedy of errors?
After a long slumber, inflation is awake and creating havoc for consumers and financial markets. The drama of the moment is amplified by the starting line from which inflation began its race higher. Since the early 1980s, the global economy mostly experienced a period of disinflation and steadily falling interest rates. Conditions were so benign that economists dubbed the period the “Great Moderation.” It was a nearly perfect setup for financial markets that seemed to gallop inexorably higher.
The perils of investor overconfidence
Economists and investment strategists are said to suffer from a malady known as “physics envy.” The physical universe is governed by laws that create certainty about the outcome of an action. If a ball is released from a roof, it will fall to Earth every time due to the law of gravity. In economics and finance, no laws exist. Only econometric models are available, and none of them rival the laws of physics as forecasting tools.
What comes after the “Great Moderation”?
This Q2 market commentary summary from CUNA Mutual Group asks: Is the global economy on the precipice of a regime change? If so, what could it mean for investors? Discussions about regime change usually occur in a geopolitical context when one country’s leaders seek to replace their counterparts in another. But emergence of regimes and changes associated therewith occur in many settings, including financial markets and the economy.
Inflation is bad news for the economy after a good 2021
2 possible scenarios for how things will go from here The global economy spent all of 2021 in a highly distorted state. Indeed, the on-again, off-again recovery from the pandemic created conditions that had little or no precedent. Despite the distortions, most financial markets produced a third year in a row of returns that should thrill investors. There is no mystery about why this happened. Corporate profit growth was well above its long-term average while real interest rates remained negative.
