Thanks, Kansas taxpayers. The Chiefs’ move worked out great for Missouri | Opinion
If this deal falls through — and it could — Clark Hunt still has a chance to preserve his father’s legacy at Arrowhead. In addition to being Missouri’s state auditor, I’m also a lifelong Kansas City Chiefs fan and a longtime season ticket holder. So, you can imagine how I felt while I was watching the celebratory press conference when the Chiefs announced they were leaving Missouri for Kansas. I was angry.

Marine invertebrates as proxies for early kelp use along the western coast of South America
Introduction Algae have been important for people since ancient times. The kelp highway hypothesis for early human peopling routes into the American continents is one example (Erlandson et al., 2007). The marine route goes along the productive coastal ecosystems provided by giant Kelp (Macroystis pyrifera) forests; the use of kelp environments by early humans is evidenced in the profuse nearshore resources present in late Pleistocene–early Holocene sites along the Eastern Pacific shores.
The Case for Continuous Reliability Management
Scott Fitzpatrick Scott is a Fixate IO Contributor and has over five years of experience as a software developer. He has worked with many languages, including Java, ColdFusion, HTML/CSS, JavaScript and SQL. Over the past decade, the processes for effective application delivery have evolved significantly. We have moved from waterfall to agile, from manual to automated, and from siloed IT operations and development teams to an approach that enables collaboration across domains.
Top 5 Benefits of a Site Reliability Platform
One of the most important aspects of a software system is its reliability — and for good reason. With so many digital options available in every industry, customers have little reason to continue utilizing applications or services that experience frequent issues with quality or availability. Therefore, it’s critical that organizations invest in the processes and tools that are necessary to ensure system reliability.

Automating Data Preparation with Modern Tooling like Snorkel and OpenRefine
We live in an era of data abundance. Every industry has access to data across their activities, and most are collecting it. However, when it comes to data preparation and utilizing that data not every organization is equal. The problem lies in the fact that data preparation tasks are labor intensive, and can comprise up to 80% of the effort in any data analysis project.
Risk-Aware vs. Risk-Averse Product Development
StackPulse sponsored this post. Scott Fitzpatrick Scott is a Fixate IO Contributor and has over five years of experience as a software developer. He has worked with many languages, including Java, ColdFusion, HTML/CSS, JavaScript and SQL. When organizations adopt Agile development practices, they also adopt shorter release cycles. These shorter release cycles mean more frequent application deployments — and more frequent deployments increase the risk of an unstable release.
4 Agile Practices for Better Incident Response
Without question, the landscape of application development has shifted significantly in the last 10 to 15 years. During that time, software organizations adopted agile development practices that helped them deliver high-quality changes to their applications with greater velocity. Modern development strategies aided in the production of higher quality applications by enabling organizations to accomplish a few key feats.
Top 10 Python Tools for IT Administrators | ActiveState
Why would one need Python Tools for IT administration? In the age of DevOps, a greater emphasis has been placed on utilizing tools that provide the means to automate both simple and complex administrative tasks. In doing so, IT personnel are freed from the responsibility of manually performing time-consuming and repetitive tasks, such as server configuration or application deployment.
Archaeologists determined the step-by-step path taken by the first people to settle the Caribbean islands Original
For the millions of people around the world who live on islands today, a plane or boat can easily enough carry them to the mainland or other islands. But how did people in the ancient past first make it to distant islands they couldn’t even see from home? Many islands around the world can be reached only by traveling hundreds or even thousands of miles across open water, yet nearly all islands that people live on were settled by between 800 to 1,000 years ago.
Looking Forward with Legacy Application Logging
When developers think of log files and log analysis, their minds typically transports into the world of contributing factors and incident remediation. However, analyzing log events doesn’t always need to be about a specific bug and its corresponding resolution. In fact, log analysis can be a very useful resource for organizations looking to develop a more high-level and large-scale plan for their application moving forward.
Ancient aquaculture and the rise of social complexity
The abilities of humans to produce and store food have been key components in theories that explain how and why societies flourished and developed complex socioeconomic systems over time. Archaeological evidence shows that the transition from hunting/gathering/foraging to the purposeful cultivation of plants and domestication of animals was an important turning point for humans on a global scale.
How To Build a Recommendation Engine in Python
To provide insight into how recommendation engines are designed from a coding perspective, this tutorial will demonstrate how to build a simple recommendation engine in Python. The engine analyzes data from previous purchases to help identify items that are typically bought together. In doing so, it will provide functionality that can be leveraged to endorse relevant products when a particular product is selected.
How To Build a Recommendation Engine in Python
If you spend any amount of time shopping online, streaming music or streaming video, it’s highly likely that you’ve encountered a recommendation engine.
How to Migrate Python 2 Applications to Python 3
Every programming language must continue to evolve over time to stay relevant, and Python is no exception. Unfortunately, that means many organizations have found themselves with bulky legacy applications written in older versions of Python—most notably Python 2.7. Newer releases of Python 3 have gained a lot of ground over Python 2, and now feature faster runtimes and larger support communities than their pre-v3 counterparts.
Creating Python Dashboards: Dash vs Bokeh
When analyzed and utilized properly, data helps to improve processes. That said, with modern data collection processes leading to the creation of rather large datasets, it can be difficult to effectively analyze data in a manner that provides the context needed to improve such processes. Enter data visualization. Data visualization is the graphic representation of data for the purpose of contextualizing said data. Through these visuals, we’re able to understand the significance of the data.
The Pirate-y Life of Ferdinand Magellan
The icon indicates free access to the linked research on JSTOR. From the start, it was hard to know whose side Ferdinand Magellan was on. Born in northern Portugal around 1480, Magellan, an orphaned son of lesser nobles, spent decades serving the Portuguese crown in its wars abroad, in India and Malaysia. One might think Magellan was the epitome of national devotion. But in 1518, after being rejected by the Portuguese authorities, Magellan turned to his country’s greatest rival: Spain.
Shift Left Without Fear: The Role of Security in Enabling DevOps
It’s the age of DevOps, and we all want to shift left, which refers to the idea of performing processes earlier in the CI/CD cycle. That includes security checks and audits. By starting security operations earlier in the delivery pipeline, it becomes easier to find problems, and teams have more time to address them before pushing code into production.
Setting the record straight on Missouri tax revenue
No one likes paying taxes. And discussing taxes, exemptions and withholding tables has been known to make many eyes glaze over. Nonetheless, it is time to talk about what is going on with Missouri tax refunds. As state treasurer of Missouri, I am charged with safeguarding and protecting the state’s financial resources so you can focus on your families and businesses.
Baking Compliance in your CI/CD Pipeline
This article was originally published in The New Stack. When DevOps engineers talk about CI/CD, compliance is not often a major part of the conversation — but it should be for any organization that wants to stay ahead of compliance challenges. Just like everything else in a CI/CD pipeline, compliance should be continual, and it should be baked into all stages of the delivery process. It’s not something that can happen in a silo.

Delivery Speed and Testing Software: A Balancing Act
One thing every developer can—or at least should—agree upon is that testing software is an integral part of the software development process. If it were up to the development team, no application would be released without rigorous testing, ensuring no bugs made their way into production. However, testing thoroughly while meeting other development goals can be tough. Nearly all DevOps organizations work with tight deadlines that don’t allow for an infinite amount of time testing an application.
7 Must-Have Skills of a Cloud Security Professional
How important is cloud security? According to a survey of over 2,100 organizations cited in a recent Gartner report (“How to Develop Infrastructure-as-a-Service Security Skills,” 22 February 2018), the category of security and risk management represented the third-largest talent gap in IT, this includes a cloud security professional. That’s a big deal for those of us living in a cloud-native world.
Why Legacy Security Practices are Incompatible with DevSecOps
As DevOps (which means the unification of development and operations) continues to sweep the software industry, many organizations are questioning how they can operate more efficiently. Where can we save time? How can we increase (or, at the very least, maintain) software quality on a development schedule that seemingly gets tighter and tighter with each subsequent release?
Gartner Market Guide for Cloud Workload Protection Platforms
Last week, Gartner released its 2018 Market Guide for Cloud Workload Protection Platforms (CWPP), which highlights trends in cloud security, recommendations for securing cloud workloads, and details about specific vendors addressing the needs around containers, cloud native applications, and serverless applications — Twistlock is proud to be listed specifically as a “container-focused” vendor for the second year in a row.
Defining the Spectrum of Cloud Deployment Technology
“Cloud computing” and cloud deployment have been a catch-all phrase over the past decade to describe anything that’s a shift away from hardware servers. However, the term has become nebulous in recent times with the growing diversity in how many different ways you can leverage the cloud. We’ve come far from a simplistic separation between on-premises and cloud. Today, it’s about on-premises versus a range of different cloud options.
