Interview
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. I started writing on an old manual typewriter at age eight. I graduated to an electric typewriter when I was 10.
How is social media changing news?
Sadly, it's blurred the lines between fact and fiction. Even big name media sources have crossed lines to get more clicks.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Clark Kent. I'm a big sci-fi geek, so how can I not go with a superhero?
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
The winner for me is #covfefe. A typo took the world by storm and became the funniest thing of the week.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Google Docs and ProWritingAid are my go-to tools. I also use Hemingway and headline analyzers.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Write every day. Even if only in a journal, the only way to grow as a writer is to write often.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
In my yard. I love being outside, and working in my flower beds and keeping up my lawn gives me peace.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I'm addicted to Medium. I love that there's a place where every writer can share their words.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Stigma keeps some editors away because they can't see past "bipolar". It's part of me but doesn't define my life.
