More than 80 years after two Allied soldiers exchanged military dog tags while imprisoned during World War II, their families reunited in Jacksboro to fulfill a promise neither veteran lived to keep. During World War II, Corporal Mervyn McCready of Australia and Private Garth Oliver of Jacksboro became prisoners of war after the Allied surrender in Java in 1942. The two formed a close bond and exchanged military dog tags as a symbol of friendship during their captivity.

Scripps National Spelling Bee: Four North Texas students advance to quarterfinals

For the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee, 247 spellers earned spots in the national competition, which began Tuesday in Washington, D.C. Four North Texas students advanced to Wednesday’s quarterfinal round as part of the 23 Texas spellers competing this year: • Avishka Dudala, an eighth grader at Rogers Middle School in Prosper. Dudala competed last year and tied for 41st place. • Luke Sturlin, an eighth grader at Kerr Middle School in Burleson.

How is social media changing news?

Social media has removed the wall from journalism a bit. Everyone is looking for answers, but that also means those of us in the 4th estate have to work harder to verify. Personally, I think social media has been very empowering for the marginalized, so I think it offers a bit of balance to news that's dictated by systems of power.
