Agentic commerce: Make your brand unmissable
A new kind of change-agent Digital commerce never lived up to its promise. Yes, it increased choice and made buying easier. But consumers got overwhelmed by options and information, and now often struggle to make decisions. Brands are absorbing the cost in abandoned carts, high return rates, eroding margins and non-stop spending to reacquire the same customers. Agentic commerce flips that model.
Will tariff refunds mean tax burdens?
Recent rulings mean that many importers will be entitled to refunds of tariffs they paid on imports during 2025 and 2026. As importers prepare to receive their refunds, they should also think about the tax implications. In many cases, recoveries of previously-paid amounts are taxable, and there may be other consequences. Last summer, we wrote about some then-pending challenges to the Trump Administration's tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act ("IEEPA").
The IRS Expands the Use of ADR Programs to Resolve Tax Disputes and Other Newsworthy Procedural Stuff | JD Supra
The Internal Revenue Service ("IRS") is doubling down on its primary alternative dispute resolution ("ADR") tools. It is clear that the IRS wants taxpayers to resolve their disputes prior to going to court.
Tax Treaty Allows Discovery of Phone Records | JD Supra
A federal district court recently upheld administrative summonses for phone records and personal data based upon a request made under a tax treaty. See Tirelli v. United States, No. 25-cv-04105-JSC (N.D. Cal. Aug. 28. 2025) and Caruso v. United States, 25-cv-03395-JSC (N.D. Cal. Aug. 28, 2025); opinions here and here. Switzerland's Federal Tax Administration is investigating several Italian individuals and their related entities for criminal and civil tax evasion.
When Worlds Collide: Tackling Taxes and Tariffs | JD Supra
The Trump Administration's renewed focus on tariffs has created novel and interrelated issues for businesses' tax and trade functions. Businesses are now faced with a changing landscape and are exploring strategies to effectively manage tax and tariff exposure. As faculty for ALI CLE's webcast Tariffs and Taxes: Navigating Complexities of Cross-Border Commerce, we discussed some of these issues and strategies. Our slides from the webcast are available here.
Kids care deeply about our planet, so adults need to start listening
By Jen Kostuchuk, Erik Steiner, and Sean Lyons “I wish adults knew that I really care about the environment and want to help, but I sometimes feel like my ideas don’t matter because I’m just a kid.” This is what a nine-year-old respondent told us when we asked how they feel about the environment. In today’s current political climate, many adults seem resigned to climate catastrophe and even dabble in climate change denialism.

How Does AI Work? Create a Neural Network from Scratch
Last Updated on September 19, 2024 by Originally published on Towards AI. By the end of this article, you’ll be able to build your own model and Machine Learning library to make predictions. Let's begin by writing a simple function and discussing it: def parabola_function(x): return 3*x**2 - 4*x+5 A parabolic function is just some function for which if we input x coordinates, it gives us a set of y coordinates which we can map to form a parabola, for eg, for this set of x coordinates.
Poitín: Revisiting the first Irish language film
By Seán Lyons Forty-five years before An Cailín Ciúin became the first Oscar-nominated Irish language film, Carraroe resident Bob Quinn directed the first film entirely as gaeilge. After spending a portion of the afternoon hurtling across the vast Connemara countryside, I arrive at one of the final outposts of County Galway before it meets the Atlantic Ocean; the village of Carraroe. I was told to expect a fortress of leafy-green trees encircling his home and I am not disappointed.
Waiting for a train with Einstein and Gödel
Gödel numbers, algorithms, and time The way humans experience time is fascinating and mysterious. Time is experienced linearly and continuously in a single direction. We cannot go back to a certain point in time and make changes to the moments we have already experienced. A famous Historian by the name of Niall Ferguson said something I find really interesting. He said people all around the world can dream of different futures.

Goodbye grads: My first - and last - CT article
As a copy editor for the Collegiate Times, I aspired to make sure all the articles I reviewed were something writers can reflect on and be proud of. Having the opportunity of advancing others’ written work is an honor to me, even if errors are seemingly minute. However, I feel this piece would be very boring to read if all I discussed were Associated Press Stylebook guidelines. Thus, I wanted to document the journey to my first ever in-person production meeting, because it was a doozy.
James Joyce and Machine Learning
Photo by Jacques Bopp taken from Unsplash James Joyce- “Penelope is the clou of the book”[1]. Introduction In this article, we will walk through training a model to recognise and punctuate the stream of consciousness in Penelope. Penelope forms a part of Ulysses, a well-renowned body of work by the Irish writer James Joyce. In this article, we are going to take a close look at Penelope, a soliloquy-styled writing by James Joyce. Penelope can be very difficult to read.

Are millennials are narcissistic and baby boomers workaholics, or are generational labels a lie?
An hour ago Sean Lyons, The Conversation Share Tweet Email Reddit Print Comments Share Tweet Email Reddit Print Comments The race is already on to label the next generation. Baby boomers, Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z labels: Necessary or nonsense?
The race is already on to label the next generation. The news regularly talks about millennials and Generation Z and the many ways that they create consternation for older folks, who are labelled as baby boomers and Generation X. Generational labels are an inescapable fixture of contemporary life. These terms have become a shorthand to evoke comparisons between young and old.
Early mobile phone ownership: influencing the wellbeing of girls and boys in Ireland?
Children live in a technology-mediated world, and most young people use a variety of technologies in their daily lives. However, despite intense public discourse, we have little empirical evidence on how technology use impacts on children’s development across a number of psycho-social domains. Research that has been conducted tends to be largely small-scale or cross-sectional in nature and most often focused on (young) adults rather than children.
What Lies Beneath: Maintaining a network of tunnels under Grounds is a never-ending job for UVA’s facilities workers
To keep UVA warm for a week during a typical mid-winter cold spell, UVA facility workers first pile up more than 1.5 million pounds of coal, then pipe in some 25 million cubic feet of natural gas. Next, they take water and start pumping it into five boilers. Big ones: Each is roughly five stories tall. Then they load the coal onto a rattling conveyor belt that feeds the coal into three of the boilers. They run natural gas into the other two from an underground pipeline.
Appendix D: Return to the Reich; an Interview with Eric Lichtblau — Casus Belli Podcast
Nov 11 Nov 11 Appendix D: Return to the Reich; an Interview with Eric Lichtblau This particular appendix is an interview with author and pullitzer prize winning journalist Eric Lichtblau about his book Return to the Reich; a Holocaust Refuges’s Secret Mission to Defeat the Nazis. Return the Riech is a thrilling read that often times feels more like a Tom Clancy Novel than a historical narrative.
Later is better: mobile phone ownership and child academic development, evidence from a longitudinal study
Digital technologies have become an increasingly prominent feature of children’s lives both within and outside educational environments (McCoy, Quail, and Smyth 2012. Influences on 9-Year-Olds’ Learning: Home, School and Community. Dublin: Department of Children and Youth Affairs). Despite considerable media debate, we have little robust evidence on the impact of technology use on children’s development, both academically and socially.
The Science of Reincarnation: UVA psychiatrist Jim Tucker investigates children’s claims of past lives
When Ryan Hammons was 4 years old, he began directing imaginary movies. Shouts of “Action!” often echoed from his room. But the play became a concern for Ryan’s parents when he began waking up in the middle of the night screaming and clutching his chest, saying he dreamed his heart exploded when he was in Hollywood. His mother, Cyndi, asked his doctor about the episodes. Night terrors, the doctor said. He’ll outgrow them.
