Spirits-based RTDs are continuing to dominate at retail. In large markets like Florida and smaller markets like Delaware, retailers say the category shows no signs of slowing. Spirits-based RTDs continue to thrive in the U.S., with the category jumping by more than 10 million cases last year to reach nearly 80 million cases in total, according to Impact Databank.

Trinchero Family Buys a Top U.S. Sparkling Winery
Trinchero Family Wine & Spirits has agreed to acquire California sparkling wine house Mumm Napa from Pernod Ricard. Neither party disclosed financial terms. The move, first reported by Shanken News Daily (SND), a sister publication of Wine Spectator, deepens Trinchero's participation in sparkling wine, an underrepresented area for the company, which produces 16 million cases annually. Trinchero CEO and president Bob Torkelson told SND that he expects that the deal will close in early 2026.

Graeme McDowell’s Whiskey Adventure
Irish professional golfer Graeme McDowell has teamed up with Boann Distillery in Drogheda, County Louth, to create Grey Coast, a new Irish whiskey blend. Grey Coast is named for McDowell’s hometown of Portrush on Northern Ireland’s north coast, where whiskey and golf are two of the most popular pastimes. (Portrush is located just six miles from Bushmills Distillery.) “I think whiskey’s always been in the blood,” says McDowell.

Foley Family Wines Buys Sonoma Icon Chateau St. Jean
Dec 9, 2021 Bill Foley is buying another Sonoma icon. His company, Foley Family Wines, has acquired Chateau St. Jean from Aussie wine giant Treasury Wine Estates. The deal includes St. Jean’s chateau in Kenwood, Calif., as well as a 6,000-square-foot visitors center and 39,000-square-foot production facility. The deal also includes Chateau St. Jean’s 79 acres of estate vineyards. Financial terms were not disclosed. Last year, according to Impact Databank, Chateau St. Jean made 329,000 cases.

Not suited to the buying strategies employed during the Covid-19 pandemic, the single malt Scotch category struggled overall in 2020. But some brands, like Moët Hennessy’s Ardbeg (pictured) bucked the trend. The brand grew 32.5% last year, increasing to 41,000 cases.

She wanted to be a dairy farmer. Sarah’s family didn’t live on a farm, but her mother hailed from a South Texas farm and made sure Sarah knew how things grew, about cattle and the soil.
