Sinclair students learn English while immersed in gardening at Dayton program

Students who speak English as a second language at Sinclair Community College are digging into their language education in a new way. ESOL professor Kirsten Goeller has been taking students to the University of Dayton’s Flyer Farm to learn English through hands-on, experiential learning since the spring. Goeller said she first tried contacting Sinclair's own garden but it was in the process of moving locations on their campus at the time.

Second lawsuit against USDA restores funding to 24 projects, including in Yellow Springs

A federal district court has issued an order to restore millions of dollars in grant money to 24 organizations, including the Agraria Center for Regenerative Practices in Yellow Springs. This comes after the U.S. Department of Agriculture terminated funding for nearly 50 community projects through its Increasing Land, Capital and Market Access Program. The programs canceled lost close to $300 million with this unexpected termination.

Central State, Foodbank to plant food-bearing trees in publicly accessible spaces

Central State University is teaming up with The Foodbank Inc. to plant food-bearing trees at the foodbank in Dayton and at Central State's main campus. This Food Forest project is supported by a $97,000 dollar Urban Forestry Grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The Urban Forestry grant will go toward planting trees in the Dayton area while paying for staffing and education around maintaining this type of orchard.
