SEC Chair Paul Atkins is right about one thing: corporate risk factors have become wildly bloated. Anyone who reads 10-Ks for a living knows the genre. A company warns that cyberattacks could occur, that regulation could change, that macroeconomic conditions could deteriorate, or that competition may intensify. The prose is often cautious, lawyerly, repetitive, and so completely generic that the name of the issuer could be swapped out without altering a single syllable of the disclosure.
