Ferroptosis in kidney disease
Abstract Kidney disease is a growing global public health concern that is associated with high rates of severe morbidity and mortality. Accumulating preclinical and clinical evidence suggests that ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death characterized by lethal lipid peroxidation, drives the pathogenesis and progression of diverse kidney disorders, including acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, renal cell carcinoma and autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease.
Zinc accumulation in macrophages exacerbates metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease progression
Abstract Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) affects over 1 billion people globally, yet the role of trace elements in its progression remains poorly defined. Here, we identify “macrophage zinc trapping” (i.e., selective zinc accumulation in hepatic macrophages despite systemic zinc depletion) as a critical driver of MASLD. In a cohort of 1069 individuals with MASLD, we found that serum zinc levels were inversely correlated with the disease severity.

Degradation of patulin in aqueous solution and apple juice by titanium dioxide/graphitic carbon nitride: efficiency, quality and safety
Abstract A titanium dioxide/graphitic carbon nitride composite (TiO2/g-C3N4; TOCN) was utilized for the degradation of patulin (PAT). The introduction of carbon nitride into TOCN narrowed the band gap of titanium dioxide (TiO2), thereby enhancing the utilization of the composite with visible light. Patulin at a concentration of 250 μg/kg in aqueous solution and apple juice was degraded respectively by 100% and 85.4% under visible light.

The zinc transporter Slc30a1 (ZnT1) in macrophages plays a protective role against attenuated Salmonella
Editor's evaluation The important work described in this manuscript reveals a new pathway in nutritional immunity: the zinc transporter SLC30A1 in the antimicrobial function of macrophages. Authors provide convincing evidence that zinc homeostasis promotes macrophage cell function that is not conducive to the intracellular proliferation of Salmonella, specifically attenuated Salmonella. This will be of interest to readers involved in pathogenesis, immunity, and bacteriology.
The Intestinal Transporter SLC30A1 Plays a Critical Role in Regulating Systemic Zinc Homeostasis
1 Introduction As an essential trace element, zinc regulates a wide range of cellular processes, including cell proliferation, DNA synthesis, gene transcription, and protein synthesis. According to the World Health Organization,[1] zinc deficiency is a global public health problem, causing diverse symptoms such as impaired growth and/or development, immune system disorders, and impaired neurological function.[2, 3] Zinc homeostasis is therefore critical for maintaining health.

High fat intake aggravates hyperlipidemia and suppresses fatty liver symptoms induced by a high-sucrose diet in rats
High fat intake aggravates hyperlipidemia and suppresses fatty liver symptoms induced by a high-sucrose diet in rats† Overconsumption of sucrose or fat is widely acknowledged as a prominent feature of unhealthy dietary patterns. Both factors commonly co-occur and are recognized as hallmarks of the Western diet, which is an important contributor to non-communicative diseases. In this study, we investigated the hazards of high sucrose or fat intake, either alone or in combination.

Delayed first active-phase meal, a breakfast-skipping model, led to increased body weight and shifted the circadian oscillation of the hepatic clock and lipid metabolism-related genes in rats fed a high-fat diet
The circadian clock is closely related to human health, such as metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. Our previous study revealed that irregular feeding induced abnormal lipid metabolism with disruption of the hepatic circadian clock. We hypothesized that breakfast skipping induces lipid abnormalities, such as adiposity, by altering the hepatic circadian oscillation of clock and lipid metabolism-related genes.
Asymmetric supercapacitors based on NiCo2O4/three dimensional graphene composite and three dimensional graphene with high energy density
A NiCo2O4 nanoparticle/three dimensional porous graphene (NiCo2O4/3D-G) composite was synthesized through a facile hydrothermal method without precipitant combined with subsequent annealing treatment. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy analyses indicate that the NiCo2O4 nanoparticles were tightly anchored on the graphene sheets in the NiCo2O4/3D-G composite.
Time and temperature dependent multiple hierarchical NiCo2O4 for high-performance supercapacitors
A multiple hierarchical NiCo2O4 (denoted as P-100), which was constructed of nanosheets covered with nanowires, was obtained by a facial hydrothermal method with the combination of annealing treatment at 300°C. The hydrothermal temperature and reaction time play key roles in the formation of the unique hierarchical NiCo2O4 based on the morphology evolution. As a supercapacitor electrode material, the obtained P-100 displays a high specific capacitance of 1393 F•g−1 at 0.5 A•g−1.
