There were winners and losers - some clubs got their targets, some players ended up not getting a move because somebody didn’t hit send on the email. Such is life. But there are still plenty of players without a home. The free transfer market, that liminal, ethereal space where footballers without a club float around for the rest of the season.

At the top level, football is a paranoid and irrational place place, full of impatient billionaire owners, self-important millionaires masquerading as players and confused fans who wish both would just sort their heads out or sling their hooks too.
