South African Sevens team’s incredible run of four tournament wins in a row came to an end at the Valladolid Sevens in Spain when they lost in the dying moments of the final to Australia. The Blitzboks, the World Rugby Sevens series champions, were bidding for a fifth tournament win in a row, but were beaten 26-19 by Australia. The Valladolid Sevens is the second leg of the Sevens World Championship, and South Africa remain the top team in the race to that championship.

The news of Van den Berg’s setback was released by Lions coach Ivan van Rooyen, who is having to find Van den Berg’s replacement for the Joburg side’s United Rugby Championship quarter-final against Leinster in Dublin next weekend.
