Matthew 3: 1-12: John the Baptist as a 'moral entrepreneur' In this reflection on Matthew’s story of the arrival of John the Baptist, I try to explain why John is more than a religious figure, he is someone who seeks to reimagine the social norms of his time - labelling the leaders of his community as ‘vipers’ - undermining their legitimacy. John is, I suggest, a ‘moral entrepreneur’ - we have quite a few of them in our world, some we like, some we don’t.

Matthew 25: 36-44 Stay woke The word ‘woke’, a totem of black liberation, has been turned into a pejorative expression, a stick to be used to beat people with. But the underlying idea, the sense that we must stay awake, alert to injustice, underlies the message from Matthew here. Writing to a people living under oppression of a different sort the evangelist warns them not to lose focus, you never know when things will change.

Luke 23:33-43: The great reversal For ‘Christ the King Sunday’ we are presented with the crucifixion narrative, the reversal of what is normally understood as kingship. On closer examination we find that it is in effect a kind of montage sequence of references from Jesus’ life. Here Luke has Jesus put into action many of the key themes that he taught his disciples.
