Above: The Julia Fischer Quartet plays Tchaikovsky String Quartet No. 1 in a 2022 performance at the Rheingau Music Festival. Exposed like bones on robbed mass graves, lone characters stick out in postwar sketches. Skeletons swerve helter-skelter in glissandi; glinting rubble flits in swift motifs. Shrill feats of insubordination rail against despotic themes unnoticed: no one hears. Dissembling errors in their dissonance, these compositions have escape doors for the rhythmically unhinged.
