The Austral teals (see Table 1) are a group of dabbling ducks endemic to Madagascar, the Andaman Islands, Indonesia, New Guinea, Australia, and the New Zealand region. Consisting of the grey-teal species complex, with representatives from all these areas, and the brown-teal species complex from New Zealand and its sub-Antarctic islands (Fig. 1), the origin and evolution of Austral teals are poorly resolved.

We illustrate our predictions using hybrids between Laysan and Black-footed Albatrosses ( Phoebastria immutabilis and P. nigripes , respectively) because we had genetic samples for both parental species and for hybrids that could be used to test for a siring bias in F1 hybrids and to evaluate long-term gene exchange between the parental species. Paired males of both of these albatrosses are known to force copulations on conspecific females.
