New Hindu Kush Himalaya glacier reports warn of deepening risk to Asia’s water security
At 7,546 metres Muztagh Ata is one of three highest mountains in the Eastern Pamir/Kunlun range which forms the northern edge of the Tibetan plateau. Although Eric Shipton, then Britain’s Consul-General in Kashgar, tried to reach the summit in 1947 and got as far as the summit dome, Muztagh Ata was not conquered until a Chinese expedition reached the top in 1956.
Frequency drift corrected ultra-stable laser through phase-coherent fiber producing a quantum channel - Communications Physics
Abstract Phase coherent fibers (PCF) are essential to distribute nearly monochromatic photons, ultra-stable in their frequency and phases, which have demanding requirements for state-of-the-art networked experiments, quantum as well as very high-speed communications. We report the development of a system that produces PCF links, also actively corrects the unavoidable slow frequency drift of the source laser.
Voices: Stanley Johnson: It’s True I Caused A BA Flight To Be Cancelled – Here’s Why I’m Glad I Did It - The Independent | Everand
It was all going swimmingly until we began our descent into Gatwick. As we crossed the French coast, the pilot came on the PA to announce that unfortunately there was a plane stuck on the runway beneath us and we were going to have to circle while they sorted things out. Ten minutes later, he made another announcement: “The plane on the runway below us is still stalled,”.”

Our review of how railway licence holders are protecting the environment
We've published a report on how well licence holders are performing against this condition. The report highlights that licence holders are generally meeting our requirements, but this varies significantly between operators and different parts of the industry. It identifies good practice and some important areas where there’s more to do. Licences and licence holders Licences are important to make sure a person (or company) is ‘fit and proper’ to carry out an activity.
Novated Car Leasing and how you can benefit
Cars and their related costs are one of our biggest household expenses, yet many of us haven’t been exposed to the savings advantages that a novated lease can offer. If you’re thinking about buying a new car or an EV (electric vehicle), you may be considering various finance options. Did you know that a novated lease is another way that you could get the car you want now, and could pay less on the vehicle price and ongoing running costs? What is novated car leasing?
Laser Doppler multi-beam differential vibration sensor for real-time continuous visualization of buried objects in multiple frequency bands
Abstract Laser-acoustic detection of buried objects, such as landmines, uses elastic waves in the ground and a laser vibrometer to create a vibration image of the ground surface. A decision on the presence of a buried object is made by analyzing vibration images for multiple vibration frequencies. With traditionally used laser Doppler vibrometers, the vibration imaging data are saved to a computer memory to be analyzed, which increases the detection time.
To Bridge the Talent Gap, Shorten the Hiring Process
Finding skilled workers remains a challenge across manufacturing. To address the current labor shortage, manufacturers must adjust their hiring processes. While many have increased wages and offered improved benefits to attract new workers, a lengthy hiring process can negate these benefits. In most cases, candidates want to start a job as quickly as possible. A prolonged hiring process could mean the difference between landing the right person or losing them to a competitor.

Opinion: You either condemn Capitol rioters' actions, or you don't
Stanley M. Johnson Stanley M. Johnson lives in Taunton. I am not pretending to speak for any one of you, only myself. I am appalled at the Taunton City Council for voting down a proclamation condemning the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. It's not rocket science. You either approve of the traitorous actions or you don't. I'm not getting into the politics of the event; no one can be seen as acting within any known laws of man.

The Racial Politics of NIMBY
My name is Stanley Johnson, I am African American, and I have been a part of the YIMBY movement since late 2016. Like so many Angelenos, I came to this city from out of state. I moved to a small studio apartment in Hollywood next to Paramount Studios in 2003. It was just a room and a tiny bathroom (like a small Motel 6) and it cost $650/month (which, for me, was a lot). It was full of many Hollywood hopefuls and the neighborhood was predominantly Latino.

Lamb's buzzer-beater did not come without controversy or drama. As Lamb released the ball, Malik Monk ran off the Hornets' bench and onto the floor early to celebrate the made basket.
Sydney Writers' Festival – Brexit Plan
As Brexit lurches forward, British institutions are increasingly finding themselves paralysed when dealing with the decision made at the polls in 2016. Will the UK survive intact, whose political careers will be sacrificed, and is there a prosperous Britain at the end of the road?
Mind Games | By Stanley Johnson
A few days after last season was over, I stopped by the Palace to sit down with Coach Stan before I headed out West for the summer. The moment I walked into our practice facility, it felt like nobody was even in the building. The court and our team room were cleaned out and the hallways were so quiet you could hear a dime drop on the other end. But as I got closer to Coach’s office, I started to hear distinct voices.

Budget banquets: spending less, eating better | The Mancunion
Chillies on sale at Manchester Super Store, Wilmslow Road. Photo: The Mancunion At some point in your time at Manchester, it’s not unlikely that you’ll find yourself sitting on a sofa eating a pot noodle and drinking black tea out of a bowl (you couldn’t find a clean mug). That’s fine. There are lots of valid reasons to indulge in the student stereotype. Lazy? Busy? Just fancy it? Slob out to your heart’s content. Broke?
Bread & Butter
If there was a way to describe my rookie season, only one word comes to mind: encouraging. Not good. Not bad. Just encouraging. For rookies, their adjustment to the league is based solely on how their new team plans on using them. Some will be asked to jump-start the rebuilding phase of a franchise right away. Others will have to sit the bench and learn the game before cracking the rotation. Very few rookies experience both extremes. I’m one of the few.

Stanley Johnson: Why Britain needs a population policy
Stanley Johnson is an environmentalist and author who is a former Conservative MEP and parliamentary candidate. In recent weeks, the debate over immigration has been taken over – I hesitate to use the word ‘swamped’ – by humanitarian issues. The sight of drowned children on Mediterranean beaches, hordes of refugees at railway stations in Hungary, or migrants congregating at Calais in a desperate bid to reach Britain – these have all understandably grabbed the headlines.
Take back control-at work
Read more: The future of trade unions Many people in the UK suffer from a daily loss of control. However, this disempowerment does not come via the European Union, but in the workplace. This reflects the strange division of our economic lives: under the UK’s model of debt-fuelled capitalism, we are granted freedom and choice as consumers, yet hierarchy, inequality and order are imposed on us at work.

NS Profile - George Soros
George Soros is angry. In common with 90 per cent of the world's population, the Man Who Broke the Bank of England has had enough of President Bush and his foreign policy. In a recent article in the Financial Times, Soros condemned the Bush administration's policies on Iraq as "fundamentally wrong" - based as they were on a "false ideology that US might gave it the right to impose its will on the world".
