Ryan Coogler’s ownership deal with Warner Bros. makes ‘Sinners’ an even bigger accomplishment Original
With his critically acclaimed hit “Sinners,” director-writer Ryan Coogler cements himself as a transformational filmmaker. “Sinners,” a gleefully genre-bending, soulful vampire spectacle, signifies on the American and Southern legacy of white supremacy at a moment when teaching the uncomfortable history of race in America is being outlawed.
Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ isn’t just scaring audiences. It’s scaring Hollywood.
7 hours ago The director of Sinners knew that it was time to break out of his comfort zone. Ryan Coogler, the writer-director of the new film Sinners, has made five movies in his 12-year career, all of them well-received hits. I’m the Daughter of a Rape Survivor-That’s Why I’m Pro-Choice
My mother is one of the eldest daughters of 16 children born in the South to cotton fields and sharecropping. But there was also a bit of that Nikki Giovanni poem "Nikki-Rosa," love and creativity through Grandmama's genius at making do with a little and unflinching faith-whatever the hand dealt her-and the hardworking life she navigated.
I Grew Up Watching ‘The Color Purple.’ It’s Still Essential
Me, then a bookish young teen read Alice Walker's marvelous The Color Purple. In Celie's letters, I discover a Black girl's voice and subjectivity that resonates with an unspoken longing in my lonely, difficult girlhood life and a Shug Avery power that I'd found mostly in other books by Black women like Toni Morrison's Sula and Mildred Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.
My Student Loan Costs Me $700 a Month. I Need Forgiveness
A few years ago while fighting down the knot in my stomach, I spoke to a student loan representative about a better plan for paying off my student loans before I was on a walker or dead. My original $88,000 loan total had ballooned to an inescapable $300,000. Interest had continuously capitalized while in deferment during graduate school and a short period of unemployment, despite years of working while making monthly payments of over $500 on the Income-Based Repayment Plan.

Why ‘The Woman King’ is revolutionary
Back in a 1974 review of the Bond-like Cleopatra Jones movie starring Tamara Dobson, Feminist and former Ms. Magazine editor Margaret Sloan spoke volumes about Black female spectatorial desire. Damn, that felt good she wrote. After viewing The Woman King, we know exactly what she meant. Cleopatra, a beautiful, kick-ass Black woman empowered by the U.S. government but grounded in her commitment to the Black community, was a Black Power era fantasy character.

The Princess Remix”
A Review of “Coming 2 America: The Princess Remix” By Stephane Dunn | @DrStephaneDunn | with thanks toNewBlackMan (in Exile) Friday, March 12, 2021. So, here’s the thing, movie magic can strike twice, but it’s rare. Why Spike Lee’s New Movie Is Right for the Moment
For decades Spike Lee has been going there—deep into American racial politics—when neither Hollywood nor American mainstream culture was either interested or invested. He did this whether or not contemporary unrest suggested the reality, and this meant that he was too often cast as the provocateur.

By Stephane Dunn | @DrStephaneDunn | NewBlackMan (in Exile) Tuesday, May 6, 2019. Here’s the first thing viewers need to understand and embrace before and after seeing Jordan Peele’s second big horror flick, US: Expect to be befuddled and remain so long after the final image and the credits end then commit to seeing it at least one more time. You can also question, is this an example of horror cinema genius or just a plain, strange, hot mess? This is a healthy quandary.
Why the 'Roots' Remake Is So Important
In January ‘77, I was old enough to be allowed to watch grown-up TV with my sister, brother, and parents. During our viewings, I would either sit in Mama’s lap, or on the floor, my back resting against her legs because it was comfortable, and because she could easily clasp her hand over my eyes if something was too intense for me to see. On one of those nights, we were all engrossed watching a man named Kunta Kinte try to escape slavery again and again.
