National forecasters released an update on the climate phenomenon this week, saying it's now predicted to last longer and grow stronger than previously thought There's a 97% chance this year's El Niño will spill over into next year, lasting until spring 2027, the Climate Prediction Center said Thursday. There's an 81% chance it will grow to be “ very strong ” by its peak in the early winter.

The hottest temps will remain to the east over the next few days. The Pacific Northwest region will just get brushed by the extreme heat that will hit the central part of the United States this week. Highs will remain between 85 and 90 degrees in the Portland metro area this week.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The start of a new work week brings a ridge of high pressure continuing to build across the Portland metro area Monday — that means heat and lots of sunshine. High temperatures will top out in the mid-to-upper 80s on Monday in Portland, with 60s along the coast. There is no rain in sight as the warm summer weather continues. The large heat dome expanding over the middle part of the U.S. will reach all the way back into the Pacific Northwest.
