I Spent 30 Minutes With Apple’s CEO. Now I Know Why John Ternus Got the Job Original
The brief ceremony introducing the new Macbook Pro this week was as low-key as the presenter, Apple’s new CEO John Ternus. He stepped onto the low stage at a Los Angeles event space with zero fanfare, said hi, and queued up a video showing the first touchscreen Mac. Then he released the modest crowd of journalists and creators to get hands-on with the new laptop and roam between eye-popping demos of music producers, filmmakers, photographers, and fashion designers using the laptop.

The Inside Story of Why Apple Finally Brought a Touch Display to the Mac Original
It’s a bright day in Cupertino. Apple’s new CEO strolls to an outdoor seating area within the company’s otherworldly ring-shaped headquarters and pulls up a chair. An employee notes the angle and asks if he minds the sun. John Ternus doesn’t mind at all. Nearly two months into his tenure, he’s been busy.

Maybe Chatbots Shouldn’t Get to Say ‘I’ or ‘Me’
You also have a problem with reliance on chatbots in the workplace, and a particular loathing for the term “human in the loop.” When they use that term, it means the human has been taken out of the productive process and is there to do some sort of cleanup work, to catch the hallucinations or things the AI doesn’t see. That doesn't work, because employers only have a couple of humans in the loop. Those people basically can't change anything.

I’m Still Convinced the iPod Was the Perfect Gadget
I remember the birth of the iPod, 25 years ago this month. I was working at Newsweek. It was October 23, little more than a month after the attacks on the twin towers of the World Trade Center, and everybody was focused on the aftermath. I didn’t go to Cupertino for the launch, where Steve Jobs pulled the gadget from his jeans pocket and boasted that it contained a whole music library. Apple couriers hand-delivered the device to me in New York, and Jobs got on the phone with me.

Trump’s Crazy AI Rebrand Was a Loyalty Test for Tech Execs—and It Worked
Seventy years ago last summer, a group of scientists met at Dartmouth College to discuss a wild idea—that machines might one day be capable of human-like thought processes. One of those scientists, John McCarthy, had suggested a name for the new field: artificial intelligence. It stuck. When you search Google Scholar for “artificial intelligence,” approximately 7,420,000 results appear. The term is utterly ubiquitous. Everyone understands it.
War Bros Didn’t Always Rule Silicon Valley
In September 2015, the Founders Fund hosted a retreat at an eco-resort in British Columbia. Most of the attendees were VCs and people from the companies the firm was backing, but they also invited a few outsiders, including computer pioneer Alan Kay, writer Neal Stephenson, and me. One morning at breakfast I was sitting across from Kay at a long table.

If the AI Industry Followed Its Own Research, It Might Have Paused Already
In early 2025 I was interviewing Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei when he explained why, despite the company’s repeated acknowledgments that AI could yield catastrophic results, people seemed largely unperturbed. “There is compelling evidence that the models can wreak havoc,” he said. But, he added, those dangers were still theoretical. Would it take a Pearl Harbor–like situation for the world to wake up to those dire possibilities? He sighed. “Basically, yeah,” he said.

AI Has Human Doctors Asking: What’s Left for Us?
Emanuel countered that he and his coauthors were careful in their conclusions. “It’s been less than four years since ChatGPT was introduced,” he said to me. “We’re making a prediction for four years from now. You don’t think that [AI is] going to be way more advanced than a doctor?” Seeking a second opinion, I consulted Wachter.
Who Cares if AI Is Conscious—It’s Basically Alive Original
I spent the waning days of summer grinding away at columns and working on a feature. But I missed a chance at a striking change of scenery—cruising the Galápagos with about a dozen prominent philosophers studying consciousness. The invite described morning classroom discussions tackling knotty questions on the nature of consciousness with marquee names in the field. Afternoons would be spent on island exploration and wading and snorkeling with rare biological species.

Tech Visionary Says the Big AI Labs Don’t Get What People Want
You recently wrote a piece in the Economist about how Elon Musk—as well as other tech leaders—have so much power in their companies that they are anti-capitalist, in the sense that their desires, rather than the marketplace, determine strategy. In general, Silicon Valley has become anti-capitalist. They use the language of markets. But around 2010, the whole model came into play with Uber and Lyft. Funded by VCs, they literally spent billions of dollars to subsidize rides.

Tim O’Reilly’s yardstick for measuring the worth of a company, person, or society has long been create more value than you capture. It’s no surprise that O’Reilly—publisher, internet pioneer, VC, conference organizer, and dispenser of tech wisdom—is applying that metric to the way people design and use AI. Specifically, he’s pushing for a future where open-source AI is an elixir for the masses.
