At the same time, the United States negotiated a deal with Saudi Arabia to ramp up oil production and helped China, India, South Korea, and Japan make new deals to replace Iranian oil imports.

Jimmy Carter, the unsung and often reviled hero of the Jewish people

History views Carter's legacy - and his many accomplishments - all wrong
Carter's accomplishments were more extensive and longer lasting than those of most modern presidents. Stuart E. Eizenstat was Jimmy Carter's chief White House domestic policy adviser and the author of "President Carter: The White House Years." He was later ambassador to the European Union, undersecretary of commerce, undersecretary of state and deputy treasury secretary in the Clinton administration.
How to End the War In Gaza
The cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah brokered by President Joe Biden’s envoy Amos Hochstein is an important achievement. It reflects the lessons that the two of us have learned in a lifetime of diplomacy and statecraft—and those lessons can be applied to Gaza and the broader Middle East by the Biden administration in its remaining days and by the incoming Trump administration.
‘The greatest theft in history’: a new exhibition in Amsterdam offers an unprecedented account of Nazi looting
The Holocaust perpetrated by the Nazis and their collaborators against European Jewry in the Second World War was the most comprehensive genocide in recorded history. Two-thirds of Europe’s Jews were exterminated. EU directive opens door for China to steal West’s tech secrets
For one, the strategy currently outlines the European Commission’s proposal to identify and assess “risks to the EU’s economic security that threaten its key interests,” such as risks related to “technology security and technology leakage.” But now, China and other nations could simply use litigation to force the disclosure of these sensitive technologies.

Urgent need to combat wild spread of antisemitism in the United States
As events since October 7 demonstrate, too many people lack historical perspective, digital literacy, and critical thinking skills. Immediately after Hamas’s October 7 terrorist attack on Israel that left more than 1,200 people killed and some 240 kidnapped, antisemitic activity surged on campuses, in cities worldwide, and unrelentingly on social media.

The State of the Jews writ large
The recognition by the United Nations in 1947 that a Jewish state, along with an Arab state, should be created out of the British Mandate, and its formal establishment by David Ben-Gurion in 1948 as a democratic Jewish state on the same land to which the Bible tells us Moses led the Jews from bondage in Egypt, and from which Jews had twice been expelled, is nothing short of a historical miracle.

The history of the Holocaust must live on Original

It’s All but Settled: The Reagan Campaign Delayed the Release of the Iranian Hostages
In 1991, a bipartisan special House task force, chaired by Democratic Representative Lee Hamilton with strong support from the vice chair, Republican Representative Henry Hyde, began probing the October Surprise. At the same time, skeptics attempted to debunk the story by focusing on the lack of proof that Casey was in Madrid. Because Hamilton’s committee could not establish that Casey was in Madrid, its report contained a lot of suspicious smoke but no smoking gun.

Forty-three years after the climactic events of 1980, the four of us—all steeped in the history of the Carter administration—believe that it’s time to move past conspiracy theories to hard historical conclusions about the so-called October Surprise.

I worked for Jimmy Carter at the White House. He should be remembered as a champion of the Jewish people
Stuart Eizenstat February 23, 2023 No American President has done more to advance the security of the state of Israel, champion the rights of the Jewish people around the world, memorialize the victims of the Holocaust and honor its survivors, and embody the Jewish tradition of tikkun olam, repairing the world, than Jimmy Carter, a devout Southern Baptist from the tiny hamlet of Plains, Georgia. And none were less rewarded politically by the American Jewish community for doing so.

The advice I gave Madeleine Albright when she found out she was Jewish

Walter Mondale: A Pragmatist With a Lesson for Progressives
When Walter “Fritz” Mondale died in April at 93, America lost one of the most remarkable public servants of our era — a man who was Minnesota attorney general; U.S. senator; creator, with President Jimmy Carter, of the modern vice presidency; a Democratic presidential nominee; and U.S. ambassador to Japan. But we also lost a political leader who had a rare combination of liberal values and pragmatic political skills, and whose accomplishments provide important lessons for today’s progressives.

Holocaust Remembrance Day
Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, is a solemn day in which we remember the six million Jews, including one and a half million children, along with millions of others who were victims of Nazi brutality who were murdered between 1933-1945; honor the 330,000 survivors worldwide, a third in Israel; and recognize how the absence of a Jewish state in which European Jews could take refuge directly contributed to the Shoah. There was nothing inevitable about the Holocaust.
Grief: The Biography of a Holocaust Photograph
The photographs of survivors being liberated from the German concentration camps at the end of World War II have become part of our shared consciousness and the basis of our collective memory of the Holocaust. In this volume, David Shneer traces the complex biography of a different but equally shocking photograph that he considers to be one of the first widely circulating Holocaust liberation photographs.

Opinion | Returning A Mensch to the White House
Opinion | Returning A Mensch to the White House by Stuart Eizenstat August 13, 2020 in Latest, Opinion, Politics What would it mean to see a mensch like Joe Biden in the White House? A great deal for the United States, for the American Jewish community and for Israel’s security. In this age of pandemics and polarization, it may be hard to envision. But it’s not a mystery. Someone who prizes decency and embodies dignity. Someone who exercises empathy and exhibits patience and understanding.
The United States Can Trade Humanitarian Relief for Strategic Concessions From Iran
Just five years ago, it looked as though Iran and the United States were moving toward more open relations. In 2015, the United States and five other world powers negotiated an agreement that markedly reduced Iran’s capacity to develop nuclear weapons and established the most intrusive nuclear inspection regime in the history of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Only a global response can quell pandemic and economic slump [Opinion]
America’s political leaders overcame political differences to enact $2 trillion in national economic support bill, while the Federal Reserve took historic steps to assure liquidity for the economy to address COVID-19. Important steps for sure, but a bigger challenge lies around the corner. This is a global pandemic causing global economic crisis; the United States must reassert its world economic leadership to protect our citizens and people everywhere from a deep, damaging recession worldwide.

The Jewish case for a President Joe Biden
WASHINGTON (JTA) — Now that the contest for the Democratic presidential nomination in America is narrowing to a two-person race, the case for Joe Biden is even more compelling and urgent. I have known and worked with him since he entered the U.S. Senate more than 40 years ago, and then as vice president. From the start of this tortuous political contest, I never had any doubt that he deserves the overwhelming support of the American Jewish community.

Why I Support Joe Biden for President
By Stuart E. Eizenstat I have worked with Joe Biden for over 40 years, both when he was a U.S. senator and vice president. Having devoted a substantial part of my life to government and beyond, to supporting Holocaust survivors and to strengthening the Israel-U.S. relationship, I strongly support him as president of the United States. He is the only Democratic candidate who reflects Jewish values of social justice and tikkun olam.

Israel should resist Trump's efforts to politicize support
The two of us have long been committed to the U.S.-Israeli relationship, understanding its importance for both countries. It is not only that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East, but it stands as a bulwark against radical Islamist threats, whether coming from Iran or ISIS. From this standpoint, it is both our values and our interests that have underpinned the U.S.-Israeli relationship over the years.
Stick with Kyoto
A Sound Start on Global Warming By Stuart Eizenstat May 1, 1998 Christinne Muschi / Reuters In his critique of the recent Kyoto accord, Richard N. Cooper notes that mitigating climate change will not be easy ("Toward a Real Global Warming Treaty," March/April 1998). He argues that allocating greenhouse gas emissions rights among nations, especially in the developing world, is impractical.
