Subina Shrestha is a filmmaker and a journalist who likes to push boundaries in storytelling. Her work ranges from print stories on the New York Times, to short fiction in virtual reality. Her documentaries on Al Jazeera have been used by various educational institutions including Columbia Journalism School, SOAS, and by human rights organizations in the Hague to discuss modern day slavery and the Maoist conflict. Thousands of people – up to 440 per day – lost their lives prematurely during the record-breaking May and June heatwaves in England and Wales. With maximum temperatures reaching 36.7°C, schools have been closed, transport networks have been disrupted and more than 20 people have died from cold-water shock while trying to cool off in rivers, lakes and seas. Heatwaves hotter than 45°C could be possible in the 2050s.

The black pirate flag was the first thing I noticed. Although I had seen the Jolly Roger image of a skull and crossbones before, this one was distinct: a grinning cartoon skull wearing a straw hat — the flag of a fictional gang of pirates fighting oppression and corruption in the Japanese anime series “One Piece.” When it first started appearing in early 2025 on the TikTok and Instagram feeds of young people taking to the streets during protests in Indonesia, I paid it little heed.
