What was your first job as a journalist?
A sports editor for a weekly newspaper in Little Falls, MN for the Morrison County Record in March, 2002.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes! My parents and grandparents each had a typewriter but the striking pieces on the page kept getting stuck.
How is social media changing news?
It's made telling news immediate in a sense that you don't wait until the next edition hits the newsstands or appears on the website.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Photoshop, InCopy, InDesign. Tweetdeck, MacMail.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter or Facebook.
Why did you become a journalist?
Being a curious person from a young age, I always wanted to know more about whatever was going on.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
We did not have one so my senior year I wrote for a high school page at the StarTribune with a classmate.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime by email or by phone between 10am-2pm.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
It was concise, to the point, generated by a locally-knowledgable person who had names and contact info ready to go.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The Athletic, Axios, Sports Illustrated, StarTribune.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Covering sports in four communities means I cannot be in four places at once unless time travel has been discovered.
