"It was shock and awe," said University District council member Rasheed Wyatt. "I don't think anyone saw this coming." Joe Golumbek said he was "outraged" when he saw Mayor Sean Ryan's proposed 25% tax hike. As the city of Buffalo is facing a 109 million dollar deficit, the mayor is proposing a 25% property tax hike. Last week on WBEN, Ryan suggested that people send him a list of proposed city cuts. Wyatt said he would start with overtime in the police and fire departments.

Catholic Charities celebrates Hope Day 2026

Wednesday is the single biggest fundraising day of the year for Catholic Charities of Buffalo. It's 'HOPE Day', a 24 hour match challenge day, in which the first $100,000 in donations will be matched dollar for dollar. "Every dollar donated stays right here in Western New York" said Chuck Hayes, Communications Chief at Catholic Charities of Buffalo. "We serve all eight counties, reaching out to people in need and in crisis." He said donors can designate how their gift is used.
