Getting thrown to the wolves
A petite, elderly woman, Barbara Nowakowski is on a fixed income that does not even allow for bus fare for travel. She has tears in her eyes as she discusses the plans the Wolf administration has for her severely disabled son, Robert. Suzanne Keim and her daughter, Sarah Keeney, have a typical mother-daughter relationship. Suzanne hands her daughter a tissue if her nose is running, fusses with her hair and reminds her where she’s put misplaced items. When Sarah has to wake up early for something, Suzanne is her alarm clock. They move through their days together with a practiced rhythm, like seasoned dance partners. And as she has for the 36 years that Sarah has been alive, Suzanne always takes the lead.
Preserve centers for those with disabilities
This is an open letter to citizens of the commonwealth, elected leaders, leaders of faith communities and leaders of the medical community. My interest in writing is because of our son, Joey, 27, and because in the coming years, there will be a flood of autistic young adults leaving high school, who will be denied critically needed services as adults because of an outdated, unrealistic “deinstitutionalization” ideology.

Self-injury: 'It's been nearly 10 years since I last cut myself' (column)
This month marks the 10-year anniversary of the first column I ever wrote for the York Daily Record. I tend not to get too excited about anniversaries, but this one feels different.
