Essay: Nature as a source of healing

One evening after a day of rain I walked to the woods near my house. I was in a bad mood and I thought maybe going for a walk would help. It was spring so I wasn’t surprised to hear some frogs as I stepped off the pavement and onto the trail. But as I walked down the first hill into a low point in the woods the sound suddenly engulfed me, and was loud. It was a chorus of gray tree frogs. None of their voices were quite the same, but they were all singing the same basic song.

Essay: Supporting my monstera

My monstera kept toppling over. Okay it was barely mine yet and its status as a freestanding living plant was becoming questionable. A friend had given me the cutting from her monstera philodendron plant. They are those huge houseplants with the lobed leaves with holes in them. They showed up frequently in Matisse paintings. This cutting was an odd shaped arc of stem with a few leaves that jutted out at awkward angles.

Essay: Blue is my new normal

Things have been looking really blue to me. No, I'm not feeling blue... I've been seeing things in blue. That's because I've been making cyanotype prints of some of my photographs. Maybe as a kid you made sunprints. You know the blue paper you put leaves and coins and stuff on, put in the sunshine and then dunk it in water? And when you are done wherever something was blocking the sun from reaching the paper became white.
