Black bear Spotted On Trail Camera at Land Between the Lakes
A trail camera recently captured a rare wildlife sighting at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. According to LBL officials, a hunter’s camera recorded a black bear wandering near Piney Campground and the Fort Henry Trail System on the southern end of the recreation area. In a social media post, LBL noted that while black bears occasionally pass through the region each year, sightings are not always documented.

House Fire Reported Saturday on Spence Chapel Road
Firefighters responded to a late-night house fire Saturday on Spence Chapel Road. Clear Springs Fire Chief Dan Upton says crews were called to the 1000 block after the fire was first reported on a porch, but flames had already spread into the home by the time firefighters arrived. Much of the structure was compromised before crews brought the fire under control. About 16 firefighters responded, with assistance from the Graves County Rescue Squad. The cause remains under investigation.
City of Mayfield seeks release Federal Disaster Recovery Funds For Retention Pond Project
The City of Mayfield is taking another step toward reducing flooding in parts of the community. City officials are asking the state to release federal disaster recovery funding for a project that would improve drainage along Red Duck Creek. The work would include replacing and enlarging several street crossings — including 12th, Wilford, 7th and 3rd streets, and clearing and widening sections of the creek channel so water can move more efficiently.

Two Juveniles Arrested Following Vandalism in Mike Miller Park
On 02/17/2026 at approximately 3 a.m. Deputies responded to report of a four wheeler being inside Mike Miller Park after hours. Deputies discovered vandalism to one of the statues at the veterans plaza. Deputies heard a four wheeler off in the distance. Upon locating the four wheeler a brief foot pursuit ensued. Deputies successfully apprehended two male juveniles. One being sixteen years old from Paducah and the other seventeen years old from Calvert City.

Local Bookstore Encourages Reading Goals For The New Year
A local bookstore in Murray is encouraging readers to make books part of their New Year’s resolutions. Bolin Books, a family-owned used bookstore that opened in fall 2022, says the start of a new year is a perfect time to be more intentional about how free time is spent. Owner Wesley Bolin says he hopes to see people trade screen time for page time in 2026. “The new year is a great time to set resolutions and be more intentional with free time,” Bolin said.
