Jared Young’s home-run heroics were not enough to save Carlos Mendoza’s job as New York Mets manager. Mendoza was fired Friday morning after 2 ½ seasons, replaced by interim manager Andy Green. The Mets (34-57) are last in the National League East, 15 games behind division-leading Atlanta and 9 ½ out of a wild-card playoff position. They lost their sixth-straight game 4-3 in 10 innings Thursday to the Chicago Cubs, who completed a four-game sweep at Citi Field in New York.

For Chase Harrington, a lifetime of effort building himself to become a hockey player with a professional future will culminate in him getting called up to the stage at the NHL draft proceedings Saturday in Buffalo, N.Y. The 18-year-old Prince George minor hockey product is ranked 45th overall on The Hockey News draft list and Elite Prospects has him 49th of its consolidated list. NHL Central Scouting ranked Harrington as the 26th best North American skater available in the draft.

RCMP seeking help locating missing Granisle man

North District RCMP’s Major Crime Unit and Houston RCMP are asking the public to determine the whereabouts of 57-year-old Granisle resident Michael Randolf Kowalchuk, who has been missing for two years. Investigators believe Kowalchuk’s white 2003 Cadillac Escalade was found burnt and totally destroyed by a member of the public on an unassigned road near Highway 118 (Central Babine Lake Highway), south of Granisle.
