Addressing Racial and Ethnic Bias in Pulse Oximeters

Pulse oximetry is a noninvasive, optical technology used to detect hypoxemia. While clinical studies have reported that pulse oximeters are less accurate in patients with darker skin tones since the late 1980s,1 this issue drew attention during the COVID-19 pandemic.2,3 Despite the problem of racial and ethnic bias being known for decades, global use of pulse oximetry continues to increase, and it is incorporated into risk scores, triage algorithms, and artificial intelligence.
