Pakistan as a country has often suffered because it has been said that it has never been a nation. The underlying assumption is that it was the flawed idea of Muslim nationalism based on religion that led to the creation of Pakistan. This is an incorrect understanding of history. The only major Indian leader who truly appreciated the case for Pakistan at least to the extent of understanding it on an intellectual plane was Dr. B R Ambedkar.

In the early 20th century, colonial Punjab had been the hotbed of ‘pamphlet wars’ between Hindus and Muslims. Things took a drastic turn with the publication of a pamphlet called Rangila Rasul by a publisher, Mahashe Rajpal, in Lahore in 1924. This was a scurrilous publication which attacked the personal life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
