Introduction A little under two decades ago, Sheller and Urry (2000) devised a compelling agenda for understanding how social life is configured through the car, paving the way for sustained scholarly focus on the complexity of the social dynamics of mobilities.

His campaign shines a spotlight on an often overlooked piece of technology, one that could offer lessons for our transport future.
