Thomas D. Kirsch’s Biography

Dr. Thomas Kirsch is an emergency physician, author, and expert in emergency, wilderness, and disaster medicine. In 2014, President Obama recognized his work in a White House event honoring, ‘Heroes in Healthcare Fighting Ebola.’ He is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at the George Washington School of Medicine and International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

He is a renowned disaster scientist and educator who authored over 175 scientific articles, textbook chapters, and a disaster medical textbook. He has published essays and op-eds in The Atlantic, Washington Post, Health Affairs, The Hill, NEJM, and JAMA. He has served as an expert commentator in most major print and broadcast news outlets.

Tom’s career includes leadership positions in academia, the private sector, and the Federal government. He has testified before Congress, served on numerous White House and National Academies of Medicine panels, and has consulted for organizations such as the WHO, UNICEF, PAHO, the American and Canadian Red Cross, the CDC, FEMA, the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, and the U.S. Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance. He has also responded to dozens of disasters, including the NYC 9-11 terrorist attacks; hurricanes Katrina, Sandy, Harvey (USA), and Haiyan (Philippines); earthquakes in Haiti, Chile, New Zealand, and Nepal; the 2010 floods in Pakistan; and the Liberia Ebola epidemic.
