One of our former Fifield Nature Education Center sub-permittee bird banders, Heather Gerth, now living with her husband David and two children in Cloquet, Minnesota, undertook with others an ambitious and daunting project a few years ago — the restoration of the 1908 Rock of Ages Lighthouse on the western end of Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior — one of our favorite places to visit.

For those of us and our wintering birds who survived the recent Polar Vortex in January 2026, when actual air temperatures reached -35 degrees Fahrenheit (F) with -45 F below zero windchills, we all deserve a down coat to keep warm don’t you think? Well, it is just such a down coat, along with some other cold survival measures that allow our winter birds to survive our cold, northern winters. In fact, their winter survival strategies are some of the most remarkable in the animal kingdom.

This review presents and examines a selection of case studies that showcase powerful and enabling applications of palladium-mediated elimination-type transformations in facilitating the synthesis of structurally diverse natural products and related targets. Classes of reactions include palladium-catalyzed dehydrohalogenations (encompassing asymmetric variants), and reductive stereoselective allylic transpositions, all of which typically proceed under mild conditions.
