The only illustration that appears in Darwin’s Origin of Species (Darwin, 1859) is of a phylogenetic tree. Indeed, the tree has become the archetypical concept representing biological evolution. Since every biological cell that has ever lived was the result of a cell division, all cells are connected through cell divisions in a giant tree that stretches all the way back to the earliest cells that existed on earth.
