Characterizing the composition and diversity of the vaginal microbiome in ovarian cancer
Abstract Vaginal dysbiosis, characterized by Lactobacillus depletion and anaerobic enrichment, may be relevant to ovarian cancer (OC) outcomes, yet comprehensive microbiome characterization in OC patients remains limited. Here, we characterize the prevalence and predictors of vaginal microbiome dysbiosis among racially diverse OC patients in the US. We performed 16S rRNA gene sequencing on vaginal samples from 132 OC patients recruited as part of the population-based ORCHiD study.

Opinions on Aliens
Thomas Tucker · Follow 15 min read · -- Why is it aliens are such a polarizing topic? The universe is wide, vast, and infinitely expanding. Our planet, our solar system, is but a speck in the grand Milky Way galaxy, and even that pales in comparison to the sheer volume of observable space.
How People in Trouble Created a Radical Health Care Movement
This simple mission statement was announced at the beginning of each ACT UP meeting. People in trouble, many of them sick and some soon dying, had no time to lose in creating a radical health care movement. The desperation, daring, and diversity of talent in ACT UP meetings were an experience many later compared to culture shock or falling in love.

These central cancer registries provide a critical framework that can elevate the science of cancer research. The Stonewall Rebellion: Now is the Time to Remember, Now is the Time to Go Forward
We, the people means all of us. Including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and gender-free people. So we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion that took place in and around the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village in New York City. On June 28 in 1969, the police raided that bar and expected business as usual. Instead, they met open resistance. The bar patrons included working class people, drag queens, transgender rebels, and people of color.
Thrown Through the Windshield
Cars, cars, cars, the long highway in SoCal, land of firestorms, bunkers of fast food, motels for fast fucks, overdoses, suicides, billboard gospels, malls and logos, passing peeks at Missions ringed with roses. A mediterranean region even so, and so adults behind the wheels bark at kids to put down gadgets and see the snowy mountain there, and there the sunny surf— gone, gone by the next exits. That would be the scenic route.

Trump, World War I and the Lessons of Poetry
This Latin inscription is carved on various war memorials, including the Arlington Memorial Amphitheater: DULCE ET DECORUM EST PRO PATRIA MORI The words come from one of the Odes of the ancient Roman poet Horace: Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori: mors et fugacem persequitur virum nec parcit inbellis iuventae poplitibus timidoque tergo.

Donald Trump’s effort to woo black voters has gotten off to a rocky start. The GOP nominee’s main argument — that black communities have been poorly served by Democratic leaders — is certainly powerful. But, as recent polls have shown, this strategy has yet to move the needle with African Americans. What’s missing from Trump’s appeal is a positive vision for how he will improve the lives of black Americans.

Why Trump might actually SAVE the GOP
As Trump marches towards his seemingly inevitable nomination, the biggest question isn't how the GOP power-brokers can stop him. It's why they would want to. Far from destroying the GOP, Trump could save it by attracting disaffected working-class voters who are sick of D.C.'s incompetent pseudo-elitists. Our broken political system desperately needs disruptive reforms that will improve everyday Americans' lives.
The GOP has some lessons to learn from Trump’s immigration policies
Polls indicate that support for Donald Trump is plateauing while key challengers like Ben Carson, Carly Fiorina and Marco Rubio are quickly gaining ground. If this trend continues and Trump flames out, the Republican establishment shouldn’t simply dismiss his candidacy as a fad. There are lessons to be learned from Trump’s unexpected popularity. The most important one is that there is broad support for some components of his immigration platform, even among Hispanics. Yes, you read that right.

Republicans should be the 'anti-war' party
The Republican Party has an opportunity to reinvent itself. It can do so in a way that reflects its core principles of individual freedoms and economy unburdened by government inefficiencies. The key for the GOP is to shed the stigma of elitism, and emphasize the value of earned success. The best place to start is to rethink two of the most destructive legislative efforts in recent history: the War on Poverty and the War on Drugs.
