How is social media changing news?
Social sharing allows news to hit many people quickly, often driven by emotion. But inaccurate or opinion pieces often errantly become "news"
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I use whatever the editor asks. But generally, everything is Web-based, be it WordPress or another CMS. Naturally, I use Google for research.
What's your favorite social network?
I still like Twitter most. Between hashtags, lists, and better search than other networks, it's easy to follow conversation, even prior ones.
Why did you become a journalist?
I was approached by a regional gadget publication who loved reading my opinions on new tech. SEW felt like a natural progression.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I did not, but I was editor in chief of the RIT Staff Newsletter, where we shared news about board meetings, HR policies and benefits, and PR
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I wrote a story on Google encrypted search. This meant analytics would no longer have keyword data. It sparked many industry discussions.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Early mornings are fine. It gives me time to properly consider time and resources and get back to an editor in a timely fashion.
What's your favorite drink?
Coffee. Some say I'm a bit of a coffee snob. I prefer Hawaiian Kona and varietals from Southeast Asia and Africa.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I enjoy the satire and op-eds in the New Yorker. To me, it's often as funny as or funnier than the writing on Saturday Night Live.
