Taylor’s downtown fire of 1879

In honor of Taylor’s sesquicentennial, we are looking back at the early days of Taylorsville and the people and events that shaped the town we know today as Taylor. After getting its start in 1876 with the arrival of the International and Great Northern Railroad, the town was first called Taylor Station and then officially, Taylorsville. Named after Edward Moses Taylor, an official with the railroad, the community immediately began to grow.

Digging the Phillips Worm Farm

Phillips Worm Farm was a family-owned business on Texas 95 just south of Taylor. Owned and operated by Henry and Olene Phillips and their daughters, Sue and Brenda, the worms lived in peat moss contained in raised beds in a building behind their house. Keep in mind, we’re talking about hundreds of thousands of worms, and they required the same basic care you would give to any “livestock” raised on a farm. “They had to be watered and fed every day,” Brenda recalled.

Happy birthday, Naomi Pasemann

Naomi Joyce Hunka Pasemann would have been 90 years old March 23. While many of you will remember her as a teacher, a counselor or a friend, I’m guessing most will recognize her name because of Naomi Pasemann Elementary School. Some of you may also recall I was the school’s first principal when it opened for the 1998-99 school year. I have often referred to opening that new school as the highlight of my career.
