The Mission: The CIA in the Twenty-First Century
Weiner, who has spent decades reporting on the Central Intelligence Agency, chronicles the CIA’s struggle to understand its mission after the end of the Cold War with rare on-the-record interviews. After the 9/11 attacks, the CIA found itself in charge overnight of a global war against an enemy about which it knew almost nothing.
Review: ‘The Mission’ shows what’s happening at the CIA right now Original
Tim Weiner likens the Central Intelligence Agency to a fortified medieval city, where locked castles contain vast libraries. “If you had the keys,” he writes, “a billion secrets were at your fingertips.” Nobody has unlocked more CIA secrets than Weiner, whose National Book Award winner, “Legacy of Ashes,” remains a vital text on the agency’s Cold Warriors. kAmw:D =2E6DE[ “%96 |:DD:@?[” =@@<D 2E E96 rxp’D C646?E A2DE 2?5 A@E6?E:2= 7FEFC6] xE’D 2? 23D@C3:?8[ :?7@C>2E:G6 A@CEC2:E @7 2?

He had spent six years with SEAL Team Two, whose specialty was arctic warfare, before joining the CIA in 1991, starting out in the Cairo station and spending a decade as an Arabic-speaking counterterrorism officer before 9/11. He now had linked up with the Kurdish fighters of Iraq—the peshmerga, or “those who face death”—who had a long and bitter history of being seduced and abandoned by the United States.

'The Mission' shows what's happening at the CIA right now

"If you had the keys," he writes, "a billion secrets were at your fingertips."
When the Threat Is Inside the White House
Security United States North America If our nation’s spies are the infantry of our ideology, as John Le Carré once observed, Tom Sylvester is an unknown soldier who became a four-star general. Two years ago, he was named the CIA’s deputy director of operations, in charge of thousands of officers conducting espionage, covert action, and paramilitary operations.

Has the U.S. Lost Track of the Spies in Our Midst?
Richard Helms, who ran the Central Intelligence Agency under Presidents Johnson and Nixon, and remained the gray eminence of American spies until his death in 2002, offered a pithy piece of advice to his successors: “Never go home at night without wondering where the mole is.” This warning is the heart of counterintelligence, broadly defined as protecting the nation’s secrets and intelligence officers from betrayal, exposing enemy spies and double agents, and guarding against subterfuges...

Book World: Political books are often bland. Mike Pompeo's is savage.
Broadside. 438 pp. $32.99 - - - "Never Give an Inch: Fighting for the America I Love" is not like most books by nakedly ambitious people preparing to run for president. It's more interesting and more vicious. It's a master class in the performative anger poisoning American politics. Mike Pompeo is a smart man - first in his class at West Point, Harvard Law Review - with a sharp tongue.

Further Reading is a monthly tangent of definitely-not-bike-related reads that have nothing to do with riding but are just too good not to share. While there aren't any 'hard-hitting' stem reviews below, you will find long-form reads, thought-provoking stories, interesting videos, and other non-bike content that we've been following from across our network and beyond. This one's a bit late, but we'll blame it on the holidays.
Los misterios de Mar-a-Lago

Opinion | The Mysteries of Mar-a-Lago
Donald J. Trump loves to attack the “deep state” — the imaginary cabal of soldiers, spies and secret agents seeking to destroy him from within the government. In the last year of his presidency, he aimed to slay that mythical beast.
Getting an abortion at 11 wasn’t a choice. It was her life.
Not quite two months in, many of the predictions about post-Roe v. Wade America have come true: Abortion has become harder to access in many areas, forcing large numbers of women to travel for the procedure and overwhelming many of the nation’s remaining clinics. But there have been unexpected developments, too.
The Legacy of CIA's Founding Fathers
This morning, we're going to talk about three of the men who helped create the CIA. At the dawn of the Cold War, Allen Dulles, Richard Bissell and Frank Wisner were considered daring, imaginative and brilliant. Under them, in the 1950s, America's spy agency launched audacious operations. It overthrew foreign governments, even attempted to assassinate foreign leaders, actions that are now recalled more with embarrassment than pride.

Book World: Essential reading for understanding U.S.-Russia intelligence warfare
Vladimir Putin is waging war against the West. He's been doing it for many years. You might call it World War Z, after the letter emblazoned on Russian military vehicles invading Ukraine. Russians write the letter Z as 3. This war will not be won or lost with missiles and tanks alone. Armed forces live or die by virtue of intelligence. They depend on it to know their enemies, to see them coming, to shape their strategies for battle, and to try to win the hearts and minds of friends and foes alike.

This Is Where Oliver Stone Got His Loony JFK Conspiracies From
Oliver Stone once made brilliant movies like Platoon, which won Oscars for best picture and best director. These days, he’s a tinfoil-hatted fabricator. His new documentary — JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass, premiering on Showtime on, you guessed it, Nov. 22 — is rooted in a big lie. It comes 30 years after the premiere of JFK, a film unrivaled in the annals of American cinematic propaganda.
