Africa’s Green Revolution threatens traditional foods
This year, AGRA, the donor-funded agricultural development initiative formerly known as the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. AGRA’s slogan is “sustainably growing Africa’s food systems”, but for years, researchers and farmers have warned that the policies it promotes are having a negative impact on African agriculture. Our new research provides more evidence to that effect.

Africa: Western-Led Green Revolution Failing Africa
CAMBRIDGE, MA, USA / KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Aug 17 2026 (IPS) - As AGRA turns 20, a new report exposes its worsening failure to double productivity and incomes and halve undernourishment in participating African nations as promised. AGRA Exposed for Censoring Criticism of its Green Revolution
On January 14, the UK-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ) exposed a wide-ranging black-hat image-laundering scheme that implicated government and philanthropic leaders. Among the culprits, who included the Qatari government, were the Gates Foundation and its signature Green Revolution agriculture initiative, the Nairobi-based AGRA. The Guardian covered the story but barely mentioned the Gates and AGRA connections.

EE.UU. Castiga a México Con Algo Más Que Aranceles

The U.S.-Mexico trade war over GMO corn heats up
A new government in Mexico has pledged to carry on the fight to keep genetically modified corn out of the national diet By Timothy A. Wise / Truthdig contributor If the U.S. government was hoping a new president would weaken Mexico’s resolve to ban the cultivation and consumption of genetically modified corn, those hopes have been dashed. “We will not allow the cultivation of genetically modified corn,” Claudia Scheinbaum stated in her inauguration speech on Oct. 1.

Genetically Modified Corn Tribunal Raises Concerns with First Decisions
The Christmas holidays in the United States are nothing compared to the celebrations in Mexico. And even less so compared to those in the indigenous southern state of Oaxaca, where I’m lucky enough to be spending the holidays. Schools and government offices closed December 15 and continue until January 8. The celebrations are non-stop. Religious and civic processions known as calendas, with giant puppets and marching bands, shut down traffic. The saints do indeed come marching in.

U.S. Misuses Trade Agreements to Undermine Food Sovereignty
Economy & Trade, Food and Agriculture, Global, Headlines, Health, Latin America & the Caribbean, TerraViva United Nations Opinion Reprint | | Print | CAMBRIDGE, MA., Dec 11 2023 (IPS) - The dispute mounted by the U.S. government over Mexico’s policies to restrict the use of genetically modified corn is the latest example of the misuse of a trade agreement to impede social programs in Mexico and other countries. The U.S. government has been doing this for years. It’s all about boosting exports.
Hijacking Food Policies to Feed Agribusiness
Donors, governments and business leaders had another lacklustre African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF) this year from 5 to 8 September in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. There was little fanfare, few major announcements and no hint of meaningful input from small-scale farmers, the supposed beneficiaries of the erstwhile Green Revolution for Africa. Tanzanian farmers’ request for a seat at the table, in the form of a more critical side event, was denied.
Mexico’s Corn Defenders Honored with Environmental Prize
When I arrived in Mexico City nine years ago to research the effort by citizen groups to stop multinational seed companies from planting genetically modified corn in Mexico, the groups had just won an injunction to suspend planting permits. Monsanto and the other companies, supported by the Mexican government at the time, appealed and the farmer, consumer and environmental groups were awaiting a judicial ruling.

US ‘exports obesity:’ the battle of the corn
by Timothy A. Wise/Inter Press Service The U.S. government has escalated its conflict with Mexico over that country’s restrictions on genetically modified corn, initiating the formal dispute-resolution process under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. It is only the latest in a decades-long U.S. assault on Mexico’s food sovereignty using the blunt instrument of a trade agreement that has inundated Mexico with cheap corn, wheat, and other staples, undermining Mexico’s ability to produce its own food.

Mexico Calls U.S. Bluff on Science of GMO Corn Restrictions
Mexican and United States trade officials are meeting this week in Mexico City in the first negotiations since the U.S. government filed a formal complaint March 6 against Mexico’s policies restricting the use of genetically modified (GM) corn and the herbicide glyphosate. Science is at the center of the agenda.
Science, Precaution, and Mexico’s GMO Corn Restrictions
U.S. efforts to bully Mexico over its announced restrictions on imports of genetically-modified (GM) corn intensified last week, as a U.S. Trade Representative official gave the Mexican government less than a week “to explain the science behind Mexico’s planned bans on genetically modified corn and glyphosate herbicide,” according to Reuters.
No Reason for Alarm over Mexico’s GM-Corn Ban
Negotiations between the United States and Mexican governments continue over Mexico’s planned phaseout of imports of genetically modified corn, first announced in a presidential decree two years ago. A high-level Mexican delegation visited Washington December 16, offering to delay the January 2024 deadline to 2025, and maybe beyond, for feed corn. Feed corn represents most U.S. exports.
