Across the Rappahannock
The Confederate Army of 1861 went to war with music built into its structure. Every regiment was required by regulation to maintain a brass band — typically eight to twelve musicians, but authorized up to sixteen — whose duties were not ornamental. They beat the drum calls that moved men out of sleep and into formation before dawn.
From Ulster to Appalachia
Every March, America goes nuts about green, and becomes briefly and theatrically Irish. Rivers turn green. Beer turns greener. Bagpipes appear in places that have not known sheep in living memory. Plastic bowler hats appear, and suddenly everybody sounds like a Frosted Lucky Charms commercial. An impressive number of folks discover that their great-great-great-grandmother’s second cousin once spelled her name with an apostrophe, and therefore the household is now officially Irish.
Post-Winter Roof Maintenance
After what seemed like the mildest and least snowy winter in years, the near foot of snow from winter storm Fern that roared into town on the weekend of January 24 nearly buried the city. Two weeks in, the snow barely melted in the wake of below freezing temperatures and wind chills in single digits. This brutal weather wreaked havoc on roofs, gutters, fascia, soffits, and skylights all over the area. Many homeowners suffered damage, leaks and ice dams.
Studying History on the Rooftop
I have always been a student of history. I was born in Capitol Hill, (on C St., between 2nd and 3rd St. SE, behind the Hawk and Dove), and have worked here for many years. My high school was off North Capitol Street, a few blocks from the Capitol building and dates to 1821. My father was also born near Capitol Hill and told me many stories about my great grandfather who started a Capitol Hill roofing business in the 1920’s, which was housed in the basement of his home at 3rd and Independence Ave.

A Roofing Contractor Protects His Own Roof from Winter Storms
As I am writing this, Hurricane Helene is raging through Florida on her way to Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee and beyond. This is a massive Category 4 hurricane, with nearly 30” of rain in some places and winds up to 155 mph, that has caused unimaginable flooding, property damage and loss of life. As I was watching coverage of the storm on the Weather Channel, I could see many roofs were significantly damaged or blown-off altogether.

He's Southbound, and Lord He's Comin' Home to You
Dickey Betts died. If you need to read a biographical tribute, turn elsewhere. While there are plenty of cookie-cutter articles about Dickey Betts all over the place, the perspective found here is from a fellow musician, a fellow guitarist, and a fellow Southerner who never met Dickey Betts or ever even saw him perform. But, oh, what an influence he had on me! The Academy of Southern Music is a reader-supported publication.
Choices, Choices and More Choices for Your New Roof
There are many choices for your roof. First, a roof is the cover of a building. Second, roofing is the material used for a roof. So, there’s your roof structure and then there’s roofing materials, which I will talk about today. Over the 13 or so years I have been writing about roofs and roofing for the Hill Rag, there has been an evolution in our industry. Technology breakthroughs and innovation, as in most industries, have impacted roofing as well.
Roofs on Capitol Hill’s Historic Homes
Most of the homes in Capitol Hill are considered historic. A very significant percentage are more than 125 years old and have roofing and other structural characteristics that add to the charm of living in historic communities of great and lasting importance. Before I venture into roofing details, I will begin by covering some of the developmental aspects that led to the Hill community as we know it today.
Preparing Your Roof for Winter
Harsh winter weather in DC may seem long ago, but for those living in Capitol Hill in 2010 the multiple blizzards of that winter and Snowmageddon are ingrained in memory. As a roofing contractor how can I ever forget it? Internal damage to homes from roof problems, including roofs caving-in and downspouts and gutters, was significant.
Taking Care of Your Roof
New sloped aluminum roof on 11th St SE near M St. Love your house? Of course you do! But true love requires a commitment. Under your roof is your home, most people’s most valuable asset. You can easily see when the paint or drywall inside your home needs to be redone, when you need new carpets or flooring, or when you need to replace your front stairs. But you probably can’t see the roof and have no idea what the condition is from year to year.
UP ON THE ROOF 2*
Someone once asked me “If you could tell your customers five things they should do to maintain their roofs, what would they be?” And I thought, that’s a good question! As roofing contractors we can have a tendency to over-complicate how and what we communicate to customers. In reality there ARE a few primary items to focus on regarding your roof so that’s what we’ll highlight in this article.
Beware of “Active” 2020 Hurricane Season
Water pooling on roof after heavy storm. And “active” is not good! Does Mine Supervisor with Bad Back Have Disability Bias Claim? - HR Daily Advisor
Terminated employees who sue often file claims for unlawful discrimination and breach of the covenant of good faith and fair dealing. Over that time, the law has become more complex, and more laws than ever before now apply to the employment relationship. Here are some nonlegal principles I have learned that might help you avoid legal disputes in the first place. No. 1: Always let an employee tell his story You might be surprised at what you learn.
A New Innovation Model for the 21st Century
In this photo taken Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, University of Washington students study in Odegaard Library on the campus in Seattle. (AP Photo/Elaine Thompson) American universities are more able now than ever before to compete with technology start-ups. Specifically, on innovation leadership. This may appear counterintuitive, given the conventional view that higher education can be staid, stodgy, insular and inflexible.
