Why I Built JubJub: A Love Letter to Storytelling and a Rallying Cry for Change
Tom Mccarthy · Follow 4 min read · -- Hi, I’m Tom McCarthy, and I’ve been obsessed with storytelling for as long as I can remember. From studying filmmaking in New Zealand and working on The Hobbit films, to heading back to the UK to dive into the VFX world with Marvel and Star Wars. I’ve been lucky to work on some of the most iconic stories of our time. But if you think this is some Hollywood fairytale, buckle up.

Why Midshipmen Must Study History
As the U.S. Naval Academy sails further into the 21st century, faculty remain alert to developments in the world around us. The return of war to Europe, the emergence of China as a global competitor and pacing threat, the ongoing national controversy over what is taught as American history, and the 50th anniversary of the introduction of academic majors at the Naval Academy, make this an excellent time to review why history remains a critical part of a Naval Academy education.

That Year Again: Tom McCarthy and Susan Philipsz on Ulysses

Being much plagued by insomnia, some years ago I took to reading, as I tried to drift off to sleep, a collection of dialogues recovered from the flight recorders of crashed aeroplanes.
Reality According to Tom McCarthy
THE MAKING OF INCARNATION by Tom McCarthy The English writer Tom McCarthy has been waging a one-man war against literary realism, or as he sometimes calls it, “the middlebrow commercial novel,” for coming on 20 years now. “Remainder” (2005), his debut effort, which was completed in 2001 but took years to find a publisher, marked the opening of hostilities.
Tom McCarthy on the Supreme Beauty of Edouard Glissant’s The Poetics of Relation
“All we do in the 20th century,” Roland Barthes once claimed, “is repeat Mallarmé—but as long as it’s Mallarmé we’re repeating, we’re doing the right thing.”We, here, is shorthand for a long-tailed literary (or more widely cultural) avant-garde; and Barthes is, of course, right.
Director Tom McCarthy: ‘Stillwater’ is not about Amanda Knox’s life experience
The more I read about Stillwater (The Tears of an Overseas MAGA), the more convinced I am that the story has very little to do with Amanda Knox in general. The only thing that was “borrowed” from the Amanda Knox story was the fact that an American college student is sitting in a European prison, having been convicted of killing her roommate. The rest of it is fictionalized, and it’s not even about the young woman in prison, the movie is about her father.
Less 'low blows', but AFL concussions remain high
A basic review of 2020’s worst knock-out incidents suggests the AFL could do more to limit the frequency of concussions, writes Tom McCarthy. BRAD EBERT’s retirement from the Australian Football League (AFL) was sudden. It followed a 2020 preliminary final in which he suffered what in boxing terms would be called a technical knock-out.

In the introduction to the 1995 reissue of his 1973 masterpiece Crash, J.G. Ballard discusses ‘the balance between fiction and reality’. ‘We live,’ he writes, in a world ruled by fictions of every kind – mass merchandising, advertising, politics conducted as a branch of advertising, the pre-empting of any original response to experience by the television screen. We live inside an enormous novel. It is now less and less necessary for the writer to invent the fictional content of his novel.

Kittler and the Sirens
In 2004, after I gave an artist’s talk in a gallery in Berlin, a group of people strode up to speak to me. They were, they told me, followers of the media theorist Friedrich Kittler, members of his entourage – or, to give it its semi-official name, the Kittlerjugend. They used this last term not without irony; but it was the type of irony that masks seriousness, in the way that Hamlet’s pretending to be mad acts as a cover for him actually being mad.

How Will & Grace proved the contact hypothesis of psychological theory
The study: can one TV show make a difference? The prejudice people feel toward minority groups is so often fueled by ignorance. That’s why the relationship a viewer has with characters on television, whether fictional or not, can be a tool for increasing understanding of different groups, even if it’s one-sided.

1. Our Tragic Universe by Scarlett Thomas (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) It would be tempting—but unfair—to call the British author’s eighth novel metaphysical chick lit. Ostensibly the story of a writer adrift in her career and relationship, the book quickly becomes, via the female protagonist’s whip-smart digressions, a meditation on the question of whether life and books are better off plotless. Sept. 1. 2.
Isabelle Mayault: In Voltaire’s Garden
The château at Ferney recently reopened to the public after three years of restoration and refurbishment. Except for the planes high above the lawns, flying in and out of Geneva airport, not much has changed at the château since Voltaire lived here between 1760 and his death in 1778. It’s easy to imagine him taking an afternoon stroll among the plane trees, Mont Blanc in the background, after a morning in bed dictating his voluminous correspondence to his private secretary.
Maya Goodfellow: The Third Runway
There are 415 British MPs who don’t take climate change seriously enough. That is the number who voted to build a third runway at Heathrow earlier this week; 119 of them were Labour. The plans sailed through Parliament, despite some vocal but limited resistance. Only 119 MPs voted against it. Most of them weren’t worried that a third runway would make it near impossible to meet the government’s carbon reduction commitments.
The Editors: Stanley Cavell
The philosopher Stanley Cavell, who died yesterday at the age of 91, wrote a piece on the Marx Brothers for the LRB in 1993: Movies magnify, so when pictures began talking they magnified words. Somehow, as in the case of opera’s magnification of words, this made their words mostly ignorable, like the ground, as if the industrialised human species had been looking for a good excuse to get away from its words, or looking for an explanation of the fact that we do get away, even must.

Health officials in Kerala have confirmed a number of deaths from Nipah virus in the south Indian state. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, there is an outbreak of Ebola.
Call it terrorism
What do you call the premeditated murder of 59 people by a heavily armed civilian? News media appear to have settled on the phrase ‘mass shooting’, avoiding the more incendiary term ‘terrorism’ because, we are told, there is no obvious motive behind the shooter’s actions.
The Girl Who Wasn’t There
On Tuesday 19 September, the 32nd anniversary of the magnitude 8 earthquake that levelled large parts of Mexico City in 1985, an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 hit the city and neighbouring states. In 1985 the epicentre was off the Pacific coast, and the death toll reached at least 10,000. When that one set our house rocking back and forth at 7.17 a.m., my wife Betty and I were about to send our daughters to school. They boarded the bus and we turned on the television.
LRB · Tom McCarthy · ‘Ulysses’ and Its Wake
How do you write after Ulysses? It isn’t just that Joyce writes better than anyone else (although he does), it’s the sense that Ulysses’s publication represents a kind of rapture for literature, an event that’s both ecstatic and catastrophic, perhaps even apocalyptic. A certain naive realism is no longer possible after it, and every alternative, every avant-garde manoeuvre imaginable has been anticipated and exhausted by it too.

Gabe Habash's debut novel, Stephen Florida, begins: “My mother had two placentas and I was living off both of them. I was supposed to have a twin.
James Butler: Milo’s Stumble
Milo Yiannopoulos is done for. The Breitbart editor, who made a name for himself by peddling ‘unsayable’ things, and riding the waves of right-wing adulation and left-wing horror which followed, finally stumbled over a genuine taboo. A recently recirculated tape of remarks on the benefits of relationships between adolescent boys and older men has finally caused the American conservative establishment to cut its ties with him.
Vancouver’s Fentanyl Crisis
|
Last April, British Columbia’s chief health officer took the unusual step of declaring a public health emergency after 200 people died from (suspected) fentanyl overdose during the first three months of 2016. By August the number of deaths had risen to 488. This is a record high, a 61.6 per cent increase on the same period in 2015 (302). Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid, fifty to a hundred times more potent than morphine. Paul Janssen first synthesised it in 1960.

The three Home Alone movies all featured in a list of the ten most watched TV programmes in Ukraine in January and it’s tempting to speculate that the popularity of the franchise reflects the way the country sees itself: abandoned by those who should be responsible for it, under attack from bigger powers and having to improvise its self-defence with anything that comes to hand. This isn’t just about the latest Russian aggression.
Excerpt of 'Satin Island'
8.1 And all this time, behind these apparitions, another one: the image of a severed parachute that floated, like some jellyfish or octopus, through the polluted waters of my mind: the domed canopy above, the floppy strings casually twining their way downwards from this like blithe tentacles, free ends waving in the breeze.
‘If I ever see you in the street, I hope you get shot’
The first time I wrote an article for a newspaper, the first online comment said: ‘If I ever see you in the street, I hope you get shot.’ The article was about being abused and harassed in the street, specifically while cycling. I wasn’t surprised that the online comments mirrored the behaviour the article addressed. But unlike the men who shouted at me as I waited on my bike in Clapham, the online commenter could be sure I wouldn’t spit in his face in response.

We only know what feels good when we look at a cover we love. Good covers are evocative, a little provocative. They’re beautiful, either as simple illustrations or complex works of art.

‘Gravity’s Rainbow,’ Read by George Guidall (Published 2014)
Audiobooks Nov. 21, 2014 “Gravity’s Rainbow,” Thomas Pynchon’s gargantuan parable of rocketry, sex and a whole bunch of other stuff, turned 41 this year — six years older than its author when it was first published. What happens when a novel whose scenes of coprophagia and pedophilia moved Pulitzer trustees to cancel the prize in 1974 (when Pynchon seemed poised to win) eases into middle-aged, canonical respectability? Well, for one thing, it gets an audiobook release.
