This 1980 short story by Toni Morrison—the only one she ever wrote—is a kind of puzzle game for readers that will make each of us examine our deepest stereotypes about race. This is the story of Twyla and Roberta, who are both eight years old, frightened, and lonely. Their mothers have taken them (or in the girls' parlance, dumped them) to the St. Bonaventure shelter for what amounts to four months.

Erasing History: How Fascism Works (w/ Jason Stanley)
This interview is also available on podcast platforms and Rumble. Ever since the first Donald Trump administration, the word “fascism” has dominated discussion around Trump’s policies and ambitions to the extent of semantic satiation. Liberals and leftists often use fascism as a blanket term for anything right-wing politicians represent and Republicans equally use “communism” to denote Democratic or left-wing politics.

Supply-Side Liberals Keep Peddling the Fossil Fuel Fix
“As long as they can get away with it, they will continue to invest in fossil fuels,” climate activist Greta Thunberg warned earlier this year. “They will continue to throw people under the bus.” Despite the vast logistical and technological challenges involved in transitioning to a truly green, climate-preserving economy, it has one undeniable sine qua non: society needs to get off of fossil fuels. It’s a mandate so simple and straightforward that no neoliberal policy wonk can swallow it.

Toni Morrison on Breathing Life into Clichés
The following first appeared in Lit Hub’s The Craft of Writing newsletter—sign up here. * When I sit down in order to write, sometimes it’s there; sometimes it’s not. But that doesn’t bother me anymore. I tell my students there is such a thing as “writer’s block,” and they should respect it. You shouldn’t write through it. It’s blocked because it ought to be blocked, because you haven’t got it right now.

A Brutal-and True-Piece of Writing Advice from Toni Morrison
The very first time I saw Toni Morrison in person was at an event in Boston, at a church, along with hundreds of people. The Beloved tour. I attended as a reader, as a Morrison fan. I’d had plenty of reader-only experience with books, but I knew next to nothing formal about writing then. Reading as a writer is a higher calling, and a whole different world.

Critical Race Theory And Palatable Black History
It’s Black History Month and it’s that time for teachers to dust off the cardboard cut-outs of leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, and Harriet Tubman from the back of their classroom closets. Schoolroom doors and bulletin boards suddenly will include Black faces of trailblazers like Barack Obama, Madame C.J. Walker, Thurgood Marshall, and more. All of these leaders are well-deserving icons of Black History Month.

7 Novels About Family Curses
I have always held a keen interest toward the processes of myth formation and how beliefs about family identity are handed down through generations. My debut novel Defenestrate tells the story of a family in the midst of reckoning with superstition and inheritance, the long-held beliefs that can shape both the collective identity of a family unit and the individual identities of its members.
